https://www.forbes.com/sites/trevornace/2019/11/23/koalas-functionally-extinct-after-australia-bushfires-destroy-80-of-their-habitat/

The chairman of the Australian Koala Foundation, Deborah Tabart, estimates that over 1,000 koalas have been killed from the fires and that 80 percent of their habitat has been destroyed.

Recent bushfires, along with prolonged drought and deforestation has led to koalas becoming functionally extinct according to experts.

Functional extinction is when a population becomes so limited that they no longer play a significant role in their ecosystem and the population becomes no longer viable. While some individuals could produce, the limited number of koalas makes the long-term viability of the species unlikely and highly susceptible to disease.

I don't know if anyone has seen them but those videos of Koala's screaming in pain from a few days ago are one of the few things on the internet I've not been able to watch all of it and are going to haunt me for a long long time.

I think everyone should consider the fact it only took one or at most a few bad fire seasons to do this. This is happening now, and faster than expected. A perfect example of how webs of life can collapse quickly and will have a spillover effect on everything else. Also by the time you have seen the results, it has already happened and it is too late and is irreversible, like a chemistry experiment.

And people are still going to deny climate change... FML.

WWF still has them as vulnerable. Which isn't great but it's better than endangered, and a whole lot better than functionally extinct.

I've read this is some what misleading. Up to 1,000 Koalas may have been killed (which is awful), but "The Australian Koala Foundation estimates that there are less than 100,000 Koalas left in the wild, possibly as few as 43,000."

I mean 1/43 is terrible, but not devastating. And supposedly the 80% of habitat destroyed was only in a specific region out of the four or five regions Koalas live in.

This. Koalas are staggeringly stupid and have next to no survival instincts, too. Some groups think the best idea is to allow the infected ones in the wild to die out, then reintroduce ones who are okay in captivity.

Koalas are an adorable animal and its easy to feel protective of them. I was fortunate enough to spend a bit of time with a couple at a petting zoo and I was amazed that theyd even made it this far, considering how docile and vulnerable they seem to be.

Is there a practical solution for protecting them?

Let's not pretend that koalas are some kind of masters of survival here. They're dumb as shit. That video of that one that was rescued? Yeah, he was walking INTO the fire and climbed up a tree. In a forest fire. If that's what he thought was the best course of action in that situation, then that's just Darwinism at work.

While koalas are usually very docile, they can get their rage on like you wouldn't believe. Strong enough to climb tall trees, sharp claws. They'd tear you a new one if they had a mind to.

Maybe if you have eucalyptus trees on your property, seeing as they're on a level of stupidity that if you pick the leaves for them and put them in a basket, they have no idea they're supposed to eat them.
