All of a sudden cared for Cloud? When they were kids, she gave no fucks about him. He followed her to the mountains and she got them both almost killed but everyone blamed Cloud instead and she didn't even feel bad about it. All of a sudden Cloud announces he wanna join Solider and then she's all like "Aw yes please come save me my shining hero please me love you long time" like WTF.

I'm like naw bitch you can't act like I never existed in yo life and then all of a sudden think you goin' get this Cloud dick.

But yeah pretty mind blogging for her to have a sudden change of heart for Cloud.

That's honestly my biggest problem with FFVII, funny enough.

Like I want to believe that they wanted to portray that Tifa was kind of a vapid bitch, but I honestly just think it was JRPG writing being JRPG writing.

Why did Aerith never bring up the fact that Cloud uses the exact same one-of-a-kind sword that her ex-boyfriend who disappeared half a decade ago used?

Meh, it's a safe assumption to say Soldiers used similar swords.

Wasn't she like 10 at the time? She was a young girl fantasizing about being rescued by a knight in shining armor.

That's the excuse the game used to justify her being a bitch; she was a kid but she was able to be friends with other kids just fine. Cloud was apparently the only other kid no one gave a shit about.

I thought they were like...

Oh shit, you're right aren't you? Cloud was only like 21 in FFVII.

I think like, Cloud was 10 or so when the Mt.Nible incident happened. He liked Tifa but disliked her friends. He followed them up Mt. Nibel basically because he liked her.

When she fell and injured herself, Cloud actually did blame himself for not saving her.

As they grew up, Tifa started to care more for Cloud, as he matured somewhat and started to talk about becoming the next Sephiroth. Tifa appreciated his desire to protect people and be a "hero", and encouraged him. She also felt bad that it was her decision to go up Mt. Nibel but he got blamed for it.

I think it is basically that she realized right around the time he decided to leave that while he did hate her friends, he was a genuinely nice boy and that he was jealous of her friends getting to spend time with her. It is pretty obvious he had a crush on her.

Kids can be assholes. Nothing surprising there.

It might not be the most noble reason for befriending someone, but that was never really the point. They're not out to make Tifa a saint. Just explaining how she came to give a shit about Cloud.

Tifa's mom died and she thought that she could "see her again" if she crossed Mt. Nibel. She was 9 at the time, so she didn't really understand the whole concept of death. She went with her friends, and Cloud followed behind. The rest of her friends eventually bailed, leaving only Tifa going up the mountain with Cloud behind her.

Tifa fell, and Cloud tried to save her but couldn't. She was hurt pretty badly. The people in the Nibelheim assumed it was Cloud who took Tifa up there, and blamed him for her being hurt. Cloud just took it, because he didn't want Tifa to get in trouble. He also blamed himself for not being strong enough to save her.

I do think it was pretty smart how they made Cloud coming back out of nowhere and suddenly being in SOLDIER all this time seem normal to Tifa

At first glance it seems like a continuity error but in reality it makes sense. Cloud did say he planned on joining SOLDIER after all before he left

It wasn't normal to Tifa. She knew he was fucked up so she made it a side mission of her's to keep watch over him, which is also why she enabled Cloud lying to the group in Kalm. This all goes back as to why she all of a sudden she started to greatly care over Cloud. I guess at the point, even though she didn't give a shit about him when they were kids, he was probably the only thing she had left from their hometown so understandably she grasp on to him.

Well yes, she did think something was off, but all first time players wouldn't notice anything too strange about her comments since as far as we know, Cloud really was in SOLDIER. The fact that the ambiguity of his situation made that lie even a little bit believable makes me appreciate Crisis Core more.
