It's been fun as its own Pokemon game. The open-world has been pretty awesome. No more random battles is beautiful

I'd say Sword/Shield attempts to take a larger step forward than any previous game in the series... and it stumbles a little, but over all the positive changes outweigh the shortcomings. It's apparent to me that Game Freak struggled with the development of this game. Still, during the 35+ hours I've put into the game so far, I've been totally engrossed in the Galar region and I'm just having a great time.

I'm a bit after the first gym, but aside of the wild area, it's even more handholdy and railroaded than SM (and as of now there's only been 1 VERY shallow cave and a bunch of routes that are little more than straight lines)

Dexit was a huge nothingburger lol

This is the first Pokemon game I have played since Red, and I am having a great time. 13 hours in, just got my 3rd badge. I totally forgot how exciting it was when you start a brand new pokemon journey, I was hooked right away. So many ridiculous Pokemon now. My biggest complaint so far is there are just too many Pokemon, it is hard trying to pick my favorites for my team! Difficulty has been pretty easy, but I don't think Red got all that hard until like the 6th gym battle, unless you picked Charmander first, took me for god damn ever to beat Brock and Misty on my very first play through at 8 years old... I have also spent a ton of time just exploring around, probably over-leveling for the story.

I found Anthem fun too but that doesnt mean it wasnt flawed as fuck, that the internets criticisms of it werent completely accurate and it the reality that it bombed was probably for the best.

Its fun doesnt mean you get to write a game off from any criticism.

it has so much fucking potential to be an amazing game. To be anywhere close to the console AAA first party titles that any other company is putting out.

yeah I can easily judge it for being a mediocre mess compared to the mountains of potential that lie on the series. Just imagine what competent developers could do with Pokmon. It should make anyone mad this is the shit they produce.

Terrible roster, meh pool of Pokes that only have those stats due to cutting all the good pokemon, horribly bland open world, cut moves, literally press forward routes with sub-sections in between cities ending in a fucking instant, non-existent story, horrible textures, free Unity asset trees, horrible internet functionalities (lol good luck joining a d-max battle), perma-exp share which trivializes the fucking game, no post game content

I mean you could literally make that a list of everything that would make a pokemon good and it doesn't hit any of them, maybe aside from actually having Pokemon and the basic battle system, which is not a credit to this game

I see it still talked about on reddit a ton.

But everyone knew the games were going to succeed regardless. For me, even if the poor quality and Dexit weren't issues, I still would have had zero interest because Pokemon is just not a fun series anymore.

I like that the story is much more subdued than past games and the characters are less cartoonishly evil. The pacing feels a little abrupt and rushed in some places though. It left me feeling like there might have been content cut for the sake of getting the game released. It's a lot less intricate than Sun/Moon's story.

I can't speak to post-game yet, as I'm right at the end but haven't beaten Champion yet. If post-game is mostly the Wild Area, I'm alright with that-- it's pretty great. I'll miss having the full Dex but 400+ is still a ton to collect. I'm about halfway to a living Dex at 35 hours.

Sword/Shield is as easy as past Pokemon games, imo. If there's a difference, it's not enough for me to be able to detect it. It's easy-- very little chance of wiping out if you come into the game with a basic understanding of the type matchups. I didn't one-shot everyone with my starter but I also was never in any real danger of losing a match.

It's far less hand-holdy than previous games. For example, the game provides you with pokeballs and grass patches before explaining those mechanics; if you catch anything on your own in the first couple hours of the game then it skips the catching tutorial once you make it to the character who would normally teach you about that system. The game is very linear outside of the Wild Area but it's also far more respectful of your time if you're a returning player who doesn't need tutorials.

It won't be our fault when Pokmon is littered with microtransactions and lootboxes. Then again, you guys will still probably defend them while trashing on EA.

it is a solid experience thus far. it has exceeded my expectations. while it does have some issues none of them are huge deals and it is a really solid game.

if you will notice the people that seem to vehemently hate it are those that havent even played the game

it doesnt have nearly the depth or greatness of the sapphire/ruby remakes but those are in a class of their own. this gen is solid for sure though

I've noticed a lot of the "it's fun!" crowd seems to have not played Pokemon for a long time. Probably easier to ignore the many parts of the game that have been removed, and the swaths of the game that have been copy/pasted from the 3DS.

It's a perfectly understandable perspective.

13+ hours and I haven't even gotten the first badge yet....if this game had the entire dex I would probably take about 50+ hours before even bothering with the first badge. I'm actually catching all I can before moving on. I'm really enjoying it. Haven't bought a Pokemon game since X/Y
