In my experience, this is not the case. Ever since I went salary, I get to leave early on Fridays without having to worry about making up my 40 hours. I can go to lunch not worrying about clocking in or out. They don't abuse you anymore than they already do.

Thoughts? Comments? Opinions?

It looks like it, until you realize youre working 15 extra hours a week and basically making the same hourly wage, except now you cant say no to those additional hours

That being said, I still think salary>hourly but you do have to be careful with how your employer may treat you

They do, but IIRC they expect you to be on call 24/7 which means you practically can't have a life outside of work.

*shrug*

I'm sure the store manager made close to 6 figures where I worked, but department managers were making like 30k-60k tops, and they would work the dogshit out of them.

Friend of mine is an assistant manager at a steakhouse chain. He works ungodly long days, is constantly understaffed, and is always being bitched at because their labour cost is so high. I have no idea what his salary is.

Salary is the best

I showed up an hour late today because i had to drop my car off at the shop.

I'm getting picked up early because that's better for my ride's schedule.

The flexibility salary gives you amazing.

I'm hourly, and while it's a decent job, because I'm also a contractor like nearly everyone else in our IT department, if I work over 8 hours a day, I actually don't get paid for it, not unless the overtime is approved well in advance. There have been times where I've had to stay over due to an issue or just needing/wanting to get something big done, and after 4:30pm hits, it's basically me working for free.

If you get paid more, you get taxed more, sure. That's not a problem though. Doesn't have anything to due specifically with overtime either.

I can say my nurse friends all prefer hourly over salary, but that's because they get plenty of overtime and are paid a high wage at time and a half.

My friend was offered a higher up job but doesn't want it, because the salary for it is just as much as their normal hourly wages for their regular amount of hours, just the position requires plenty of overtime, which doesn't pay any extra. So basically, shed be working the same amount of hours for way less money.

In some rare cases hourly is better than salary.

I'm a system engineer and i prefer hourly. My OT is approved up to a certain point, my manager is in California and isn't a stickler for clocking in and out on time. The system admins are salaried and they just get worked to death. During projects it's brutal, the lead system admin is on call 24/7.

My pay is high, not as high as theirs but close enough. My benefits are the same, my work life balance is superior. I commute 10 minutes to work and leave at 3:30PM every day unless I want the overtime which I get paid for.

I could do salary if i got a 30K pay bump and an easier work environment.

This is why I've never seen the appeal of these heavy hour careers like lawyer or surgeon. You'll stress yourself into an early grave.

On the flip side, my IT job pays handsomely, lets me work from home as much as I want, and on average I only do 20 hours of real work. The lower levels of IT really suck but the more specialized you become the less actual work you seem to do.

It depends on the company tbh.
At my last two jobs I'd routinely get told "go home, you're not being paid to be here" and it was salary.
The only time I did hourly we had a system were if you were asked to stay late you and the person who asked (supervisor/manager) would have both to sign a form saying what time you would work from (eg if you finished at 6pm and were to stay late, you'd start it at 6pm) and what time you were working until and if you went past that a new form would have to be made for the second set of hours.
Mostly so overtime was tracked properly but me and the one manager never used it since it'd be pretty much "BrutaI can you come in to work now? Yes it's your day off so you'll get triple no don't tell anyone you're working, okay thanks see you in ten minutes"

One thing that always confuses me is salary is still paid by the hour and they still want you to fill out a timesheet even though everyone knows the timesheet gonna be utter bs.

By paid by the hour I mean you make certain amount per hour and you work 0 hours etc.

I actually dont know if im hourly or salary. On paper it looks like salary but if you work overtime you get more money if you call off (and dont use/have days) you get paid less so it feels just like a hourly job. Granted though if your relief shows up 5 minutes early constantly and you leave you get paid the same.

Yup. Ive seen people do the math and they come out to like $12 an hour while their regular managers are making $13 or $14 with OT.

But it was always the people not getting a good bonus that were complaining.
