Its not unprecedented. That's what Sony did with the Vita and PSP.

Was it confirmed those cartridges were specifically for the ps5? Also if they are memory instead of games.

meh, Ive had no memory storage trouble with my 500gb PS4. The only reason this would become an issue for me is if they stop selling physical copies of games.

Uh 24 pin connections and cartridges used for pretty much anything is stil common in computers for a lot of stuff isn't it? The ps5 has a confirmed ssd iirc.

This could be related to the fricken power or something

Also bias at all in this video? Not even trying to hide it.

So we're going back to PS2 memory cards?

I find this hard to believe, even more so that we know the system comes sold with an SSD inside.

My guess is that the PS5 will have internal storage that is not replaceable and that these memory cards are for adding additional storage, just like with the vita.

The pro to this is that they could sell the PS5 base model at a lower cost and you upgrade your storage capacity with one of these later.

The rumor is that games will come on these carts. So yes, they would be proprietary, like any cartridge-based system. They're not separate memory cards.

This sounds reasonable if they're doing m.2 ssds that they're going to solder directly to the board.

However unless it also doesn't have USB ports there's no reason it shouldn't be able to support an external HDD

Doubtful considering Sony being such a major player behind bluray. If it's not something only for the devkits, I could see it being something that you could keep games/apps on, as that perhaps you could keep them preloaded so that you could flip through things faster while having more in the background.

It could also be for vr. Perhaps games that have vr functionality come with a disk while also being on these to deal with fluid vr or somehow use these for vr.

Sony isn't really a "major player" behind Blu-ray they have like a 2% stake.

Ps5 is confirmed to have 4K Bluray support. Doesn't mean that games necessarily have to use it. Having games on a separate SSD fixes the impossible storage issue we've been dealing with this generation.

I have a 4 TB drive on my PS4 and it's still not enough. I have to delete games every time I get something new. Games are only getting bigger and they can never afford to put in a big enough drive. Make 1 TB cartridges that don't need giant installs on the console and book, problem solved.

I have a 2 TB firecuda in my ps4 slim and that was overkill. I've been pretty disappointed with the PS4 this gen. They abruptly stopped the PS2 classics and there are hardly any exclusives this time around. I'd have probably been fine with a 1 TB.

The cycle will continue if true I hope MS comes out on top next gen. They have Sony beat in everything but games.

Yes, another reason there is no need to switch to cartridges, especially considering that with the backwards compatibility being do to the similar architecture, I'd really doubt they'd use the cartridges for games unless it's only so to enhance certain games or other similar outputs like vr or even just having something to do with the 8k 120 fps gaming
