I remember one time I was in an argument of some sort on the Politics board, and someone said "this is the kind of stuff liberals want" and posted a short video of PC Principal.

I helpfully pointed out that PC Principal is a fictional character, not someone real, and they said "yeah well there are probably liberals that want this".

I learned about this episode via a tweet by Hollywood Reporter. Like a fool I went to the comments, and while there were some replies that mentioned the difference between "punching up" and "punching down", far more comments said "South Park mocks everyone and by the way these people are freaks who need to be stopped".

Point is that this is the issue with punching down. Bad faith actors latch onto this shit, use it as ammo, and in a world where people are being murdered just for being trans, it seems myopic.

that's with anything. no matter what the issue, there are bad faith actors. doesn't mean we should empower them by letting their rhetoric be the default, though.

just start picking up on patterns between the genuine and disingenuous, and treat them accordingly. even if it's dismissing them completely.

I feel this is something that is lost on viewers of South Park, because everyone on that show is a bad faith operator. It's an entire world of bad faith operators.

I want to underline this point.

We all know that South Park's format is well-established, but is that a shield from criticism? Have they never made a bad episode? Have they been right every time on their message?

I'm not saying South Park can't do this. You actually can say whatever you want, offend who you wantif you have the courage to own it.

The question is, "Who do you want to offend? And, why?"

It is unfortunate that some trans people in the real world are murdered for being trans, but that doesn't grant them immunity to joking mockery or ridicule.

Especially on topical subjects like trans athletes in sports.

If you are born a gender and you die, and they find your bones hundreds of years later and test the DNA, you're going to be test as the gender you were born as. So you can identify how you want but in the end it still doesn't matter. Kind of the cruel joke on the trans community.

That is honestly a good point, I think you're the first to ever say that on CE.

Some may end up taking offense to that though (even though you're not trying to be offensive).

South Park is a show where a Chef at an elementary school taught four kids that if they get a pig and an elephant drunk, that they'd make sweet love.

This same episode had bestiality.

It's a fucking stupid point. They'd just say the body's sex was female. Nothing to do with their gender identity.

They'd say "this person was a man or a woman," actually. And that would be based solely on their biological sex at birth. That's exactly what we do now in Anthropology. No one gives a shit if pre-historic people were confused about their gender when scientists are classifying them.

I know he didn't, but this whole tract of conflating dead bodies and gender identity is a useless exercise anyway.
