You're playing as two brothers on the run. So it's more like a big road trip adventure. Each episode generally deals with a new issues and characters. The characters are still well written but because of this structure the game feels a lot more slower paced as a whole. It doesn't really escalate each episode as much as the first game did. The Last of Us series also has a main character who delves into it in a major way so it has both examples. In fact I can't really think of many poor examples of LGBT characters in video games.
