not counting shit like your 401k/IRA/etc, just how much do you tuck away into a savings account or w/e each month?

my wife (borat voice) & i are looking into houses and our budget is impacted by my insistence that we dump 20% of take home income into savings, wanted to see if im being overly parsimonious or if my wife (borat voice) has no concept of money

I try to do 400 a month. At least 200 if I can't manage 400.

Couldn't the savings be used for the house down payment then? Or maybe I'm misunderstanding your situation

we have the down payment, its more about me saying "we can afford up to this amount because i want our debt to income ratio to be X and i want to be able to have Y amount of money coming in after expenses while retaining 20% savings each month"

Usually around $1500-$2000. Kinda weird, I don't really ... like budget like I should. I just know I see money getting higher in my checking account and think "I'll put a few hundred into this savings for home improvement, a couple hundred here for a new car, and maybe a few hundred into my Robinhood account" >_>

Oh my bad. Not sure why I was thinking this was about down payment.

I agree with you. Don't become house poor, or whatever the term is.

And the savings is gonna help considering full house costs are not always transparent. Things like renovation, repairs, etc.

I make $32k a year, live alone, and live paycheck to paycheck usually.

I have no savings whatsoever.

Nothing. There isn't enough for that after essentials unless we gave up what minor luxuries we have. That should change in May when our cost of living is going way down.

Our bank account does go up about 250 a month but it's not really intentional, I'm just pretty frugal with what we have.

We do. We have a shared checking account for bills and living expenses, and a joint savings account. Then we have our own checking and savings accounts.

That is actually awesome. Most people would flip at the idea of a married couple having separate accounts.
