It's like working in a precinct full of corrupt cops: they can't afford to tolerate cops with integrity, in case the decent cops derail the gravy train. So they make life too difficult for the decent cops to continue working there.

I'm of the opinion that most people who become politicians are good, or at least have good intentions but the demands of the job tends to push them into behaving a certain way.

Power corrupts and all that...

Lots of responsibility
Corruption all around that you have to work with to get anywhere
Hard to get ahead unless you "work with the corrupt system"
Idiots are more inclined to go for it as they lack the self doubt others have
etc.

Than they found out all the conflicting things they will inevitably have to do in order to compete and keep their positions...

Because most politicians succeed by using our hatred of others. It's impossible to vote for a good politician anymore.

IMO, a lot of them go into it with good intentions. They want to make a positive difference but then they see how much money they can make and how important it is to be loyal to the party above anything else and its just rational decision making at that point

Good people do go into politics, the problem is that succeeding involves saying a lot of what people want to hear, instead of the truth. A "good" politician usually doesn't last long at that.
