I hear that The Stars, My Destination is good.

I've heard it described as a sci-fi The Count of Monte Cristo. I've read a little, but I like it, so far.

Ishmael is also pretty interesting from what I've read. it has a telepathic gorilla.

Black Leopard, Red Wolf is really good, IMO.

it's the first part of an "African" inspired fantasy trilogy.

How about authors?

Cormac McCarthy
Haruki Murakami
Laird Barron

You almost can't go wrong. Barron's newer stuff has been a little weak.

Catch-22
Mogworld
Jam
Will Save the Galaxy for Food

I have some nostalgia for the His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman, but I haven't read any of those recently so.

I also have some nostalgia for The City of Ember but again, haven't read recently.

Haven't even finished this series, but I might also wanna recommend the Seventh Tower series? It's one of those series I never got around to finishing as a kid, but I'm still kind of interested in getting back into them.

Iris Johansen writes good thriller/ mystery? type books. The Shannara series is good for fantasy stuff.

Red Phoenix by Larry Bond is a good military fiction about a new Korean War if that's more your thing

Timeline by Michael Crichton. Historical fiction and science fiction in one fell swoop.

The Eight by Katherine Neville. Also historical fiction, and political intrigue. Especially good if you like chess (though it's not necessary--I enjoyed and I don't know much about chess).

The Long Walk
I'll second that it's a short story but definitely good. It's a part of 4 called the Bachman Books actually written by Stephen King. Also includes Rage, Roadwork, and The Running Man.

Excellent suggestion

I don't know why, but my go to is the one we read in middle school, A Wizard of Earthsea. Haven't had the time to read the others in the series, but that one at least for me is a decent read.
