It was a return to form for Disney. They hadn't been doing so hot in the 70s and 80s.

Without Great Mouse Detective, there is no renaissance.

Disney as a company was in a weird place throughout the 80s. Like they were around but they aren't some massive titan that they are now.

Like they funded movies about a guy in commercials. Sure it was Jim Varney but could you imagine Disney making a movie about the Geico lizard these days. I don't even know if they own Ernest.

It also refers to their animated movies having a major comeback too. I don't think Oliver and Company was a big hit. They sold off the rights to Brave Little Toaster movie and I think that still flopped.

Hell just look at this list

Yeah, and that particular string of movies (Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, culminating with The Lion King) were also some of their most successful releases ever.

War money doesn't last forever
So Disney had to do sum drastic changes on management

It is a lengthy matter that cant be explained on a forum post, do your research

To add to what has been said, GMD and Oliver and Company were definitely steps toward the Renaissance, but the proper films of that classification have a particular aesthetic that was fully formed with Little Mermaid.

On the whole, I'd rather have a Marple Cinematic Universe.

To put it in perspective Disney were nearly bought out in the early 80s. That's unimaginable now.

2 or 3 days ago Disney was tweeting its catalog as a Disney plus promotion and and reminding everyone of the absolute landfill worth of garbage they put out for like 3 decades

Because it was a literal renaissance. Renaissance = rebirth.

The Little Mermaid was the start of actual classic Disney movies again after the garbage that dominated the 70's and early 80's. (Tho Black Cauldron is a cult classic, and Great Mouse Detective and Oliver & Company have their fans).
