By taking out a loan to pay for 1 day of fun that they will remember until the inevitable divorce. Best way to start that marriage is by being in debt and having money problems from the rip. Gives you something to squabble about/ "You wanted an open bar! Look at how much that set us back!", "Well maybe if you didnt insist on a 2000 dress that you are gonna wear once we wouldnt be so bad off. And you just HAAAAAD to fly in your druggy friend from Arizona, because "she couldnt afford to get here on her own"."

I went to college but worked full time whilst studying full time... and ten years later when I did get married, I also had some decent savings built up.

I've said it in other threads before where even though we spent all up about $70k (including the sangjit gifts) for the ceremony and two receptions (in different countries), it was worth it since it was important under Asian cultures/traditions and I know it really meant alot to my wife.

Yeah.

But it doesn't always happen. Between the two of them, Mrs. DevsBro's parents might have been able to chip in $100. If they went without for a while.

We should have just done this tbh.

Ours was right around $3k, including reception and honeymoon. We'd hae saved around $2k (we were going to honeymoon, ofc) and wouldn't have had to deal with my dumbass mom-in-law.

Shrug. Hopefully not. It's only been a few years and we've had our ups and downs but let's see. Besides, I've become a much more family-man now (vs pure career/ambitious).

She moved countries to follow me when my firm asked me to spend a couple of years in Singapore. She took a pay cut but I got a promotion and a significant payrise at the time... and then we just didn't live beyond our means.
