I have folders for each artist, then subfolders for each album, except for a handful of miscellaneous folders for specific genres when I only have one or two songs from an artist (i.e., MISC-Disco). I also try to standardize all the filenames, tags, and album art because soooooooo many people suck at creating MP3s. "Various Artists" sends me into a rage.

My SO used the Chaos system, everything was in one big folder and he sorted them by changing the filenames (a1 Alex Peace - P.I.M.P (Blaupunkt).mp3, a2 Talking Heads - Road 2 Nowhere.mp3, etc). Used to drive me crazy.

So how do you organize your music files?

Artist -> Album -> Songs
Is there another way?

All of my CD's were in ABC order (Artist -> Album) at one point...a long time ago.

Artist - Year - Album

That way the file manager sorts them alphabetically by artist and chronologically by album.

Other: Everything not piano-based and everything that IS piano-based, however, the former also has 2 sub-divides for eurobeat and Japanese productions but I admit I rarely use them.

All in one folder, alphabetized by artist. A lot of my favorite CDs are stacked on my headboard or in my pickup. A couple are on my desk.

Well these days I mostly listen to music on youtube since I didn't transfer any of my music files from my old PC to my labtop.

That said, my old playlist was all dumped into one folder. I renamed all the files Artist Name - Song Name and organized the folder in alphabetical order.

Should probably be said that I'm not particularly big into finding new music, and I'm more of a song person than an album person, so I didn't exactly have a shitload of music constantly getting added or deleted. I don't think my playlist ever topped 2000 songs, and was generally between 1000-1500 songs.

Chaos

Some stuff is organized by Artist -> Album -> Track name, some isn't.

Some stuff is in one big folder called Music.

Some stuff is in another big folder somewhere else, also called Music.

Some stuff is in another big folder somewhere else, called New Folder.

Some stuff is sorted by subject like Driving. I don't drive. They are also in New Folder. A different one.

Some stuff is sorted by genre. My idea of Country music might be a little different than yours.

Some tracks do not have descriptive file names, instead relying on playlist files. The playlist files could be anywhere. They may or may not be with music files.

Some file names and ID3 data are grossly inaccurate. Like, this bad,

My physical formats are sorted by format, then the CDs are on two separate bookcases, one for single-artist issues and a second for soundtracks, compilations & multiple-artist classical releases. With the exception of the latter, my CDs and cassettes are then alphabetised by artist, then in order of singles, compilation albums and regular albums, which are alphabetised within their sections. Vinyl is split between singles and LPs, then alphabetised by genre and artist (I don't fancy having Lacuna Coil and Leaves' Eyes stuck between Grieg and Rossini!).

Digital music files are foldered, artist -> album/single/EP -> songs numbered in order of original release. I mark compilations with an exclamation point at the start of the folder name, & EPs & singles get [EP] or [CDS] (I know, but it's consistent) before the title. I also try to format my album folders as "Title [year-format-bitrate]" within that.
