Last time I got an oil change was in December. I got a new job this year thats 5 minutes from home thus cutting my driving in general.

Also I email been getting my oi changed for years at the dealership. WHats the difference between going there and going to a random Jiffy Lube?

I find that if you go to a shop that specializes in your vehicle's brand (GM, Audi, Honda, etc.) they do a better job than Jiffy Lube. Sometimes the people at JL just don't give a fuck. I had the bolts on the oil pan strippped at a JL (got corporate to replace the pan and bolts). JL is probably cheaper than an auto shop though, and damn sure cheaper than the dealer - unless you're under warranty. The one thing I like about the dealer though is that they throw in a free wash. That's at least $10-$15 around here.

I've also had good experiences at Pep Boys, but it depends on the staff.

When I had a long commute I changed the oil based on mileage. With a short commute I do it based on time.

Both. But you should routinely check your dipstick.

I dont trust those jiffy lube type places. Theres one in my town that didnt put any oil in one guys engine so it fucked his car ALL up. I also dont trust the oil that places like that put in the engine. At least at the dealership I know Im getting synthetic.

As far as going off of time or mileage I would recommend just going by mileage

Dealer will have better service and be more consistent with using the proper oil for your engine.

But it's important for your oil to stay clean with such short trips as it doesn't really have time to get up to temp. If you care about the car,I'd change it every 6 months minimum and a year if you don't care too much about it.

Oil over time doesnt do any favors

What do you drive? That's the answer.
If your car wants Mobil 1 synthetic, then that's what you get, and any garage can do that.

I just do it whenever the "change oil soon" light pops on

Which is usually about every 7500 miles, or about 8 months.

Sometimes those lights arent synced up with the engine running conditions though. If they do, then that's good enough

Whichever comes first. But if you don't drive it that much, maybe twice a year.

Rule that I've always seen is on a time window, 6 months. Distance, depends on what your owner's manual says.

Just go to anyplace that is reasonable and for what is recommended.
People overthink oil sometimes and forget about just driving sensibly.
Remember slow accelerations, and gliding into a stop probably extend the life of an engine more than anything.

I work in the automotive business, and the general consensus is that regular oil changes are the lifeblood of maintenance. Do it both by time and distance - every 7,500 miles or every 6 months. Keep an eye on your dipstick every other gas fill up just to see if there's something wrong.

Growing up I was always told 3 months or 3000 miles, whichever comes first. So using that rule I go by time cause if it'd be more than a year before I hit 3000 miles.

Also, a new standard of oil, ILSAC GF-6, is coming out next year, as a generally better oil, and specifically meant to handle issues by direction injection, turbocharging, or especially both.
