Vertex great, Yu-no left me wondering/hoping when the "real" song would start (it didn't)

I think I kind of wanted to go with World 5 (wow "Menu 2" "World 5" these generic names in match to wow man) because I've heard Menu 2 so much from playing Smash Melle so much back in The Day that it felt "retired" in my mind or something like that and also I like gameboy stuff too but, ,, really, menu 2 is a grand spectacle while world 5 is really plain in comparison, even taking into account hardware limitations.

Snubs match pretty good. Voting Torrid Tumble despite the vocal part at the end becauase, while you might think "heaven"s instrumentation is more my digital style, like I said with TerraTech I can kinda enjoy these rustic guitars in TT (wow which TT am I referring to here it's a mystery) and the piano in "heaven" manages to be super off putting to me, perhaps also with the sax-like sound. Some of Heaven comes across as a bit repetitive in a bad way for me, while I can get more behind Torrid Tumble overall throughout the song (not counting vocal part but it's a small enough section that I can still enjoy the rest of the song and feel like I'm enjoying a song). Heaven does have some good parts like the chaotic feeling at the beginning (sounds like they have vocals there too but they're distorted just (rip html codes probably EDIT: oh I guess not huh.) enough for me to be okay (I exaggerate but still)), and also moving into section 1:50 is pretty cool for a calm bit too. Torrid Tumble has one of those too though at 2:40 and I like it better. Ultimately if I ask the question "which would I rather listen to" it feels like I'd point to Torrid Tumble without question and so there's my vote

Kinda underwhelmed by the picks for the first match. Vertex Cradle has a sort of repetitiveness that reminds me too much of that Final Fantasy track nominated for my ranking topic, and YU-NO is a nice little jingle but doesn't go any further than that.

Losers match is actually way closer than I thought it was going to be. SSBM Menu 2 has always been my favorite menu theme from Smash, and classic Kirby music is a very unique style that's one of my favorite in VGM. I actually flipped my choice for this a couple times when writing this up, but I feel like I am decided. Great match!

There are a lot of cool elements to Heaven, but what really always sold me on it is that groovy piano loop going on in the background, especially that part at 2:27 where it shifts key. This is repetitive, but the good kind where it's really catchy and plays around with a bunch of variations. Very cool sound design all around. When that rustic guitar in TT started playing I winced and was expecting this to just sound like Bastion music. I do not like Bastion music! But THIS, wow! I was totally not expecting this to go this direction, and this ended up sounding really good! That little high-pitched keyboard layered on top of the guitar at 2:24 and a couple other places is my favorite part of this, it actually reminds me of '00s anime music somehow. Best match today.

Jeez Vertex Cradle is ridiculously good. Having said that, even though I more than acknowledge yuno the song is not really a match for it, it's ironic since Mycro raised a point directly to the contrary but it did spark an emotional engagement with me, and that's why I'm siding with it.

close 2nd match. stage 5 isn't exactly the most ambitious song out there, but I think it's really nice. menu 2 is a decisively alright song too imo

heaven great. torrid tumble good too, but this match is pretty damn straightforward for me unlike the other two

Both are nice (though completely different in feel) but also have some shortcomings, Vertex Cradle is kinda too repetitive and YU-NO just doesn't have enough going on for me. In a match like this I kinda have to go with the more energetic one, we seem to be divided here over which we feel more lol but for me that's usually going to be one more like Vertex Cradle

Super Smash Bros. Melee - Menu 2 - 7/10

Ahh the memories...of playing Brawl lol. This really is a great rendition of the theme though, really outdoes itself as a menu theme. Reflective but still gets you pumped up.

Kirby's Block Ball - Stage 5 - 7/10

Like the only kirby ost I don't know lol, the melodies are shockingly nice and almost kinda emotional at parts. Certainly one of the better old-school game songs I've heard. I might vote for it if it was longer tbh.

Surprisingly a bop. Quite unique and man it gets really catchy and dance-y. Almost reminds me of a couple songs in Spark 2 tbh

Mekazoo - Torrid Tumble - 8/10

A very...unique song, to be sure. The guitars do some really cool things at points but at others I feel like they're kinda fighting the song, idk. But this is also pretty darn cool, this is strong for a snubs match for sure. Woaah holy shit there's vocals...Damn yeah this is cool but i still dunno if i can vote for it over Heaven...neither of these games deserve to die first round ;;

Thousand Memories - Vertex Cradle: 7.5. Loud and brassy, which is usually not my thing. Reminds me of some of the battle themes from Final Fantasy X. Has a bit of charm to it; I like how it always feels like it's moving forward in a literal sense, like I'm running or on horseback or on a train. I'm surprised at how much I enjoyed this!

YU-NO: A Girl Who Chants Love at the Bound of This World - YU-NO: 8.5. Aaaahhh this song. Should I have put this on the set? I wanted to because it showcases some of YU-NO's softer, more wistful pieces. Forget sadvnpiano.mp3 - sadvnmusicbox.mp3 is where it's at. I'm a sucker for a good music box theme.

Super Smash Bros. Melee - Menu 2: 4. As I said in the nomination topic, there aren't many combinations of songs from this game that wouldn't get a support from me. But why is Menu 2 here and not the iconic Menu 1? Menu 2 isn't super memorable to me.

Custom Robo - Heaven: 1. oof that opening is a mess. It doesn't get much better from there. Actually around the 2:30 mark it gets a little Sonic 3D Blast, so that's a small improvement.

Menu 2 great stuff. Was always happier when this was playing in just about every Smash game. Stage 5 is pretty catchy too.

That is definitely not my experience, but I don't speak for everyone. Menu 1 was even included, unaltered, in Brawl as a menu theme. Then again, Menu 2 got a remix anyway. So what do I know.

Kirby's Block Ball - Stage 5 - I can't believe I'm voting against Menu 2, but I've grown weary of it...nothing against the music itself, it's just that years ago when I played lots of Smash I listened to it way too much. I mean, back then I thought Menu 2 was the coolest menu theme ever. I can't deny it's full of cool countermelodies and runs. Stage 5 is standard Kirby music, which is usually enough for me to like it a lot, though....

MATCH 1

Vertex Candle's really cool! Really powerful strings and brass coming together in a way that sounds super neat. Now this is a song that sounds adventurous in a way that I really enjoy!

YU-NO (song) is pretty calming, but it's kind of weak for the music box style. Granted, I think I tend to like music box arranges a little less than arrangements with the usual instruments, but this particular song kind of goes into "uninteresting" territory.

MATCH 2

Menu 2 is a nice and peaceful, and at times playful, arrangement of the Melee theme that we all know well. Not much to say about it other than I like it.

Stage 5 is pretty nice actually! It has that happy mood to it that I like about Kirby music. Close match, but I'm feeling Menu 2 a bit more.

MATCH 3

Another close match between two songs. I don't really feel that strongly about either song here. They're decent, but not particularly remarkable. Heaven has this neat set of piano chords in the background. Torrid Tumble sounds like a song that would play while you're going on a drive through some rugged terrain. Maybe some wildlife poking their heads out from the brush around you too. Torrid Tumble's probably more my thing? And it's what I'm preferring right now so that's where my vote goes to.
