YSOtEotT (really rolls off the tongue, huh) is pretty alright, but held back by particularly weak instrumentation in parts, which it needed to not have because I still like Passion for Exploring more than I realised

Last Surprise unsurprisingly good. HODO not bad but it doesn't come close enough

Of the three opening themes for Ougon, I feel this one (which is also the current one) is the weakest by a considerable margin (hence the reason i tossed it in the lower set). Slum Street cool, a kind of 90s I will never not like. Yes I'm voting against my own nom oops. I probably would've still had golden showtime over a lot of other things but not this

I love this contest. I don't have the patience to explore unfamiliar OSTs, and I don't play many new games, either. Contests are the primary way I learn about new VGM.

Persona 5 - Last Surprise - this is definitely one of my preferred Persona songs.
Snubs match is hard... Bloody Roar 3 - Slum Street for now, 'cause those chord changes are way too awesome, but I'll have to listen to both again tomorrow.

Passion for Exploring is a song that's actually grown on me a lot over the years. Somehow listening to it more outside of context made me like it more haha. The intro is a little too crunchy in ways that I somehow don't like (which is unusual) but as it gets going it kinda blends into the song more. End of Tales has the opposite problem; it has a SICK INTRO WHOAAAA and then kinda wears off as it kinda meanders around for its run time. It has some super sick standalone sections though; 0:53 to 1:18 in particular is a really cool breakdown but then when it comes back it feels like there's oomph missing that should've been there. Regardless, gotta side with it this time cause its heights are much higher than Passion, while its lows are about the same.

HODO is a very funny song name but unfortunately I don't find it that fun itself :(. can't say that i didn't see this one coming but yeah last surprise is still crazy good lol, even though i regret voting for it almost every single time i did in VGMC12 oop[sies

I'm WAAAAY more impressed by Golden Show Time! right now than I know I have been in the past hearing this song. The vocalist is actually the sort of like gothic-pretty-boy-ish vocals that I usually really like for some reason so idk what I was on when I heard this song and formed my opinion of it. I do wish it had some stronger melodies and was in a little better quality, but it's definitely a contender here. oh oops Slum Street is 90s synth sex oops FUCK NO THIS MATCH IS ACTUALLY WAY BETTER THAN ANTICIPATED NOOOOOOOOOOO. the stuff i love about slum street beats out the stuff i love about golden show time right now but this is gonna be a nailbiter for me

YSOtEotT is fairly decent, a solid mid tier Falcom track. I'm not as much of a fan of Passion for Exploring as I am of several other VVVVVV tracks.

Maybe one day I'll acquire a taste for Persona vocal songs, but HODO is too good to vote against today.

Interesting that both the English and Japanese titles for the Umineko fighting game are listed here. Pretty good match.

VVVVVV - Passion for Exploring: 7.5. One of the weaker V6 songs for me at least, though it still gets a 7.5.

Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana - You'll See Out the End of the Tales: 7. Why does this beginning sort of sound like Bloody Tears? The beginning is exciting but it loses me when the piano comes in. This feels like an instrumental version of a vocal song.

Persona 5 - Last Surprise: 7.5. Sleek and well-produced. A nice ride, like the best P5 music.

Umineko: Golden Fantasia/Ougon Musou Kyoku (CROSS) - Golden Show Time! ~Ougon Musou KyokuCROSS~: 7.5. I like when it goes all casino. I also like this singer - the way he sings is atypical of most of this kind of music that I've heard. This really grew on me - I listened to it twice.

Bloody Roar 3 - Slum Street: 6. Feels very "fake" in that very specific sampled guitar way (this is not necessarily a bad thing). Prog synthesizer. Interesting enough.

Never been super huge on Last Surprise compared to a lot of people. HODO is pretty fun. RO has some good tracks.

Show Time is fun, though a bit weird. I somewhat dislike Slum Street.

MATCH 1

Interesting match. This is the kind of match where my vote largely depends on the songs drawn because I generally like music from both games. With this specific match, though, it drew two weaker songs from the respective lists. Passion for Exploring is neat, but I prefer the songs with stronger melodies like Popular Potpourri and Potential for Anything. You'll See Out the End of the Tales is kinda the same way. The melody's not as good here compared to something like A-to-Z or Sunshine Coastline. Leaning more towards You'll See Out the End of the Tales here, but this easily could've gone either way depending on the songs that were drawn.

MATCH 2

Ahhhh this is such a tough match too! This time, it's because both songs are very good. I just really enjoy Persona 5's sound when it comes to the vocal songs, so Last Surprise and similar songs are great. Great jazz/funk/whatever sound. HODO, much like the rest of the songs from this setlist, is really folk-inspired and I like that a lot. The acoustic guitar and violin sounds great here. I feel bad voting against Last Surprise, but HODO truly got the upper hand and surprised it this time because the music that was chosen for this list was a really cool new discovery! HODO included, of course.

MATCH 3

This is probably the one Golden Fantasia song I've listened to before this, funny enough. Despite my extremely vocal adoration for Umineko, I've never really gone and listened to Golden Fantasia's soundtrack that much. I've watched through a lot of gameplay videos, though, but it never crossed my mind to check out the soundtrack haha. I guess because a lot of the music used in the game is just Umineko's music I never really stopped to consider the potential game-exclusive songs. Anyway, Golden Show Time feels like a hybrid between Umineko's style and Rose Guns Days' style. Like this song feels a lot like Love is Omerta (Rose Guns Days' OP). Just with Umineko's brand of organ and harpsichord sprinkled in. This is pretty much a long-winded way of saying "I like this song a lot" lol.

Slum Street is some pretty cool prog rock. Don't really care much for that synth melody during the first 30 or so seconds, but the rest of it is super cool! Golden Showtime's flair is just too good to pass up, though!

VVVVVV - Passion for Exploring - 9/10
Pretty amazing for a chiptune song to feel nostalgic, but this is it. And even the title implies what this conveys perfectly, which I've said countless times as something I really enjoy with music, a real sense of adventure.

Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana - You'll See Out the End of the Tales - 7.5/10
I really hate these matches between more chill, slower songs and songs that I just want to turn up and...air conduct to, yknow. But this doesn't quite have the same sort of constant powerful upbeat feel as the one I couldn't vote against yesterday. Maybe it's better that it's got more variation, but the slower, darker parts just kinda lose my interest a bit more. That said, it's got some super strong parts that really pull it up.

Persona 5 - Last Surprise - 7/10
Ah yes, the persona song everyone knows now. Super funky and nice, I've always loved how much of a defined style Persona has. Surprisingly though this still kinda can fall into the background for me a bit, there are probably plenty of Persona songs I like more (notably one that came up in RtVGM, Invitation to Freedom) But this also goes on for quite a while, which it depends on if that's a good or a bad thing but I'd say it's a bit better here because extra verses to a song like this add a bit of nice variety from just the chorus that you expect.

Ragnarok Online II - HODO - 6.5/10
Honestly a lot of the same positives and negatives as I got from last surprise, but I think I just like the musical style of Persona a bit more than this. Hard decision but I do think enough to make a distinction.

Probably my least favourite song of this setlist, but I do like it. There are times when it's kinda too dark or not as focused so I start to lose interest a lot, but a lot of the times where everything breaks down aside from one main feel is always pleasant. And when it's kinda just an ordinary vocal song it does that pretty well.

Bloody Roar 3 - Slum Street - 5.5/10
Funny, two setlists I've actually heard before today by going through the bottom of the supports on the last days (given i only got through like 20 whoops). The guitar part is kind of cool but a lot of it kinda bores me for being like a rock song. It's just...missing a lot, slow rock isn't really my thing if it doesn't change it up a lot.

At first, I'd assumed that RO2 had an unfair draw. Last Surprise is about the only song in the P5 set I would vote for, and it's no doubt one of the best standalone tracks in the field. Against like 95 percent of possible matchups, Last Surprise has an easy win...but HODO happens to fall in the sterling 5 percent difference. (cont.)
