The average person can barely afford an upkeep of $2000/month which is what you basically need to get by and live a mostly crummy life. Home and car values aren't proportionate to average earnings. Theres too many people born with a silver spoon in their mouth who can't possibly understand the struggles of the average person because they don't know what it's like to start working when you're 15 or younger and throw away the social life you desperately need when you're a teenager.
