in tropico 5, i tried to be a good presidente. my country just collapsed on its own.

basically i tried to run the country, focusing on farming and mining. until now, i still don't know if it is game mechanics, a bug or other factor causing my economy to implode like that.

basically the country flourished, farms are producing, mines are producing, there are alot of surplus. i built schools, universities, uncensor media, promote equality. everyone have home, fed, their children are well educated.

citizens were happy, my rating is high, i keep winning election without cheating.

upon the peak of my utopia, the problem start showing. production started to dwindle. seeing their report pages, it turned out my workers are quitting somehow. now this is where i don't know the cause. my best guess is there are mechanics in game where poor citizens accept whatever work they can, while the smarter ones work in better places. using real world logic, my citizen are so smart they don't want to work in the mines, farms and other blue collar jobs, which so far have supported my country. nobody is working at the mines and farms. i hired foreign workers, which were expensive. much more expensive. while it kept me afloat for some time, eventually the surplus started going down, down down into deficit. i tried any way to salvage the situation, build factories and craft center for better educated citizen to work better job. so instead of exporting raw produces, i turn them into manufactured products. but with the mines and natural resources output low, i have to import raw materials, eventually the cash dwindled too because of the cost of importing materials and not enough capital to continue my operations.

i started going into debts. unrest began among the civilian. i tried to salvage everything into tourism, but it doesn't work. i barely have enough capital, the middle classes to rich family started getting poor again, and ratings were all time low. rebellion started and being the peaceful country, my military isn't too developed. the rebellion started from pockets of angry mob then devolve into full viva la revolution. the mobs started to have weapons. my military base are down one by one, and finally the rebellion ended until nothing is left but ashes, and game over screen.

i uninstalled the game after that and never touched it again. it was in 2015 or something.

Lol that's how I feel in 6, which I think is a lot more politically demanding than 5. I'm probably just not using all the tools right. It also doesn't help that everything is fine for several years and then your population just explodes.

I need to learn to use those tools better >_>

I think I'm just going to spam boats for this level eff it. I love the writing though. The whole premise of the level is that you have to win a golden ticket to go to Mr. Wonkmeister's chocolate factory >_>

imo it's the easiest aspect to master your power flexing skills because you're using the same philosophy for everything else. Don't do what's necessarily right for the citizens, but what is best for the country ie. Capitalism

If you play the game like it's Sim City or Civilization, you're going to fail because a dictatorship is wildly dynamic but also unpredictably fun. I understand not everyone prefers that sort of anti-utopian micromanagement approach tho.

They brought back a lot of the political factions that I think they kind of watered down in 5. And added some more emphasis on tourist stuff.

I don't know what's wrong with me I did the first levels just fine. This one was going just fine and then all of a sudden I find myself 50 grand in the hole and I can't do anything -_-.

My approval rating is at 74% though and I'm exporting chocolate which is the next objective so I can technically make progress >_>

Well I legitimately have no idea what happened but after way too much time (and restarting way too many times) I actually somehow completed it.

When the game told me I was in too much debt it let me continue anyway and I am glad I did, because after just sitting for like ten minutes while stuff was happening, I had a positive balance again. And then the game said, "How do you want to advance to the Modern Age?" I don't remember the three options but I went with tourism since it seemed like the cheapest.

The shitty thing is that the more money I made the lower my approval rating got, so eventually I just stopped holding elections. My disapproval rating was below 20 but there was never any rebel threat, I guess because everyone was happy. Maybe it helped that I had the Coliseum idk.

The next level was way too friggin' easy. I think they were trying to make it hard by not giving you *any* fertile land for any plantations, ranches or even logging camps. But you have access to gold mines and you can still make rum by importing sugar and shit >_> And I wound up stealing Stonehenge which makes trees grow so I could log and get coconuts and make planks and boats.

I think people were high. They said both that pirating mission plus this mission I'm on now, where you need to generate a lot of research points while developing your tourist industry, were way harder than the chocolate factory mission but I did the last one in like two hours and I'm almost done with this one and I'm making money like crazy.

It seems like on Normal difficulty you can get away with just never holding elections as long as everyone's generally happy (50+) with everything.
