Yeah I used to sell my cards but then I was like, "Well if I just do like $10 here and there (like every couple of months) I could just use them". I know they're absolutely meaningless and it's a waste of money -_-.

No, there are a couple of idle software programs out there that you can use that just simulate the game running. It can get annoying for other people when you start cycling through games though, since they get that little visual notification on their screen "Soandso is playing X Game", and it can pop up *a lot*. So I do a courtesy and go invisible.

They don't really fulfill a function except for weirdos like me who will spend money for shit -_-.

Most games on Steam now have a Badge associated with it. To craft the Badge, you need to complete the set of cards. To get the cards, you need to idle the game. BUT, you can only get a certain percentage of the set by idling - the rest of the set you have to trade for or buy. There are normal cards that you can use to level up the Badge 5 times (each time it gives you 100 xp and there's a different picture denoting a different level), and there are foil cards which are more rare and it just crafts the Foil Badge (a one time deal, but I think it gives you 500 XP... I don't remember).

The more badges you make, the more XP you get, the higher your Steam level goes. This doesn't really mean much though - higher Steam levels let you customize your profile page with more widgets, like showing off your rarest achievements or favorite games or favorite badges. But you don't need a super high level to unlock everything. In fact, where I'm at it just unlocks more Friends slots (because I'm rolling in friends).

Also every time you craft a badge you get a few items - a background picture for your profile and an emote you can use in chat (both related to the game), and a discount coupon for a random game that lasts all of like a week before it expires. You can sell these background pictures and emotes, but honestly it's far cheaper to just buy them on the marketplace than crafting the badges to get them.

ALSO.... The game developer gets a cut of the sale of the card so it kind of supports them, too.

You can break down cards into Gems to create booster packs that give you more cards. Once you've idled all the cards you can get from a game, you are also eligible for random booster pack drops for that game, and the higher your Steam level the higher the chance of getting a random booster pack. Booster packs can be sold for money or opened up and the individual cards sold.

Yes. You won't get a lot of money but if I were smart and sold all my cards I would have at least... *runs the numbers* 18 dollars if I sold them for 5 cents each, though some cards go for more.

Some of those foil cards can go for about a dollar which is nice if you're cheap like me. I've been able to buy new games on summer sales just on cards alone.

I won't even waste my time.
I got on steam last year so I probably have like 50 cents worth of cards.
