The situation is you are in a bunker or submarine with the ability to fire hundreds of nukes. Your systems are telling you that your country has been wiped off the face of the map by a massive nuclear attack. You are unable to reach any superior officers or your civilian government and all indications are that they were killed in the nuclear attack.

You have the ability to launch a full scale counterattack, and your final orders are to launch if this situation happens. Do you launch the nukes?

Can a submarine even carry 100s of missiles? Dont they usually carry like 20

No, but you can potentially remotely launch hundreds or thousands of missiles from one. The Soviet system, for instance, has you launch a missile which flies over the Soviet Union and sends commands to various different launch sites telling them to launch.

it's my duty to day that i would- in order to maintain the unstable peace of MAD- but in reality i probably wouldn't

there was that one soviet guy that saved the world by not retaliating to the strike that ended up being a sensor error

additionally, if i'm actually in a safe submarine i could wait to make the decision until i confirmed something more, via random radio transmissions or something
