Or maybe I don't like bullet hell games.

I doubt I'll beat this game (challenging) but alas, I'll keep trying.

Isn't it part Roguelike?

Being highly susceptible to RNG and having runs where you're more or less screwed is kind of in the genre's DNA.

I watched a video that claimed being good at a Roguelike is a matter of being able to tell when to restart the game to try for better drops.

Sounds like a perfect storm of frustration to me. Bullet hell to make sure you die a lot, Roguelike to make sure you lose all your progress ever and never get the chance for a rematch.

Which is sad because twin stick shooters are totally my thing.

I have 60 hours of playtime and over 200 attempts and still haven't won. I was literally a single hit from killing the final boss at one point. It is a very frustrating game. And yes, I know I'm bad at it.

The problem is that a lot of the game only opens up to you once you beat that particular boss. I love the game for the variety of weapons and items you can find but I hate everything else about it. At least when it comes to a game like Dead Cells (which I'm also shit at) I can still truly enjoy and appreciate the game as I'm failing. But it's not the same with Gungeon.

Depending on your load out and RNGesus, the game is miserably hard or frantically fun.

Bingo.

I think I beat Dead Cells in 120ish runs. But at least I had cells to spend and there was a sense of progression.

Gungeon is just...shittier. Not bad...just not as enthralling.

I mean Gungeon still does have that sense of progression since you buy and unlock items to be used in the Gungeon. But like I said all the best ones can't be obtained till after you start beating the game consistently. There's nothing wrong with that of course, it makes sense to do it that way. But 60 hours is too long to go without a victory.

I like it a lot. I can understand if you don't like or are bad at bullet hell style games it won't be for you. But I think that's an upside, not a negative. One issue with genre-bending roguelikes that I have is they often water down the core game play elements just to make it easier to progress through brute forcing it over repeated tries.

Positioning is very important in this game. Sure you can dodge roll over bullets but the best defense is avoiding situations where you can avoid being damaged in the first place.

As an extension of this, its important to know how enemies behave and the way they attack.

Now Necrodancer, that's a game I'm better at. :)

Dead Cells agree, Rogue Legacy I loved but it didn't have the staying power this does.

But don't worry if you don't like it, there are a ton of Roguelikes in a ton of genres, you've got options! My personal favorites are FPS Roguelikes(Mothergunship, Tower of Guns, Immortal Redneck, Ziggurat, etc etc) and Slay The Spire(I wish there were more card ones, but none match its quality).

I intend to beat this though. Very determined.

Also, the starting characters are pretty crappy compared to the ones you unlock. Though, I personally liked Marine > Pilot > don't care after that.

Marine has the best starting weapon and the Pilot has a crappy starting weapon, but can give you the opportunity to go to the secret chamber and pick up more items because of his starting item.

That challenge is easiest on Rainbow mode with any character as you won't really need keys or to buy from shops. Hell, Rainbow mode makes everything easy if you can get Clone or Gunther as a starter.

It's one of the very few roguelikes/lites I tolerate...then again, I've only played a few hours and haven't gotten appropriately far enough to form a legitimately formed opinion on it. So...?

I just know, on the whole, I really don't like the genre. It's one of my least favorite.

It's not, maybe it's because Rainbow mode is extremely broken (I discovered it too late, or I would've done that exclusively the moment I unlocked it). The choice of a selection of A or S rank items is broken, you don't need to spend money aside from floor one to unlock secret chambers (and can save for elevator fixing).

Also, it's amazing for finishing those dumb ass hunting quests too (start with A/S gun, rush to clear rooms and restart with elevator).
