With immigration raids expected to begin Sunday in at least nine major cities, some U.S. citizens are taking precautions, including carrying their American passports at all times, to avoid being mistakenly detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. The wary Americans, often Latinos, said they don't want to get swept up in the planned roundups announced by President Donald Trump. "I was born in this country," said David Cruz, communications director for the League of United Latin American Citizens. "Im a third-generation Texan. Ive been carrying a passport since the day he was elected." Passports, used by international travelers to return to the United States, are legal proof of citizenship.

A Los Angeles journalist from Latin America, who did not want his name used out of fear his passport would be flagged, said he began carrying the document with him this weekend. Naturalized in the 2000s, he said recent stories of citizens mistakenly detained by ICE made him think he could be wrongly targeted. He said it poses a particular quandary for naturalized citizens with accents because ICE agents may believe they are in the U.S. illegally and not afford them the rights of Americans, including due process, access to a lawyer and leaving their homes without proof of citizenship. "Its creating a two-tier system with second-class citizens, people who can be detained without access to a lawyer unless theyre carrying a federal ID," the journalist said. "I was pointing out to my friends, hey, heres my passport, and Im carrying it for the first time because I dont want someone to stop me to say, 'Prove you're a citizen right now or well throw you in a cage,'" he said. "I'm literally worried about my pets and about paying my rent."

Wait ICE can do that? I might start carrying a passport too I'd be fucked. I don't know how I would be able to prove it if I got stopped on the street.

They've detained people wrongfully in the past who have then been forced to prove their citizenship, so in short, yes they can.

Ridiculous statement but whats stopping them? I mean, the worst that can happen is you get killed. And you wonder why the police are so quick to react with deadly force when we got people like you around who have this mindset.

More often than youd think guy. I cross the US/Canada border all the time. If youve ever done that, the very first question asked is citizenship?. This is not a false statement, right? My answer is always the same but every so often I get a border officer who wants details so I oblige accordingly.

I must ask, are you a Native American who crosses the border regularly? Or just someone who crosses the border regularly?

If not, dont act like you have any clue on what I said. Im not playing the victim here, rather, Im doing what I was raised to do and be 100% truthful to people who can lawfully detain me if they see fit. Im not trying to start a fight with them, just providing all pertinent information.

But Im not one of them. I am a compliant person more than willing to provide identification. Its actually fucked up you guys would even equate me to them. The antics you described are the equivalent of what those sovereign citizens do, like I am a free human, not a man. Youre restricting my liberty of movement to cops. It never ends well

God I love watching sovereign citizen arrest videos. They are some of the dumbest people alive.

I love those videos too. My favorite is the girl crying about free inhabitants and you need to check your laws, call your superior, legit love that.

But Im not one of them. I am a compliant person more than willing to provide identification. Its actually fucked up you guys would even equate me to them. I abide by both countries laws and I 100% comply when asked. Now Im curious why You guys have a problem with that? Thats kinda fucked up on your part. Im not being obnoxious, I answer correctly and for the most part am treated with respect. Does Native Americans having citizenship in the US and Canada not jive with you? Honestly, explain yourselves because Ive never conducted myself in a manner that resorted to me being detrained or arrested.

What citizenship did you hold first/what country were you born in and currently reside

Detroit, Michigan, USA. I reside in St Clair Shores, Michigan, Camp Verde, Arizona and Oneida of the Thames, Ontario, Canada. I travel frequently between all three and the record of my crossings is clearly documented. Would you also like to know why I travel frequently? Because I also spend a great deal of time in Dalian, China, Kiev, Ukraine, and Dubai, UAE

Edit: Id like to add that Ive never actually been asked your question at a US/Canada border. But my travels are always reported and again, Im more than willing to be honest with border security.

Again, if youre ever asked, this is how you get sovereign citizend

But why? Explain that part to me. Because Ive never said Im a sovereign citizen. I cross borders not just to and from the US/Canada but Im China, Ukraine, UAE and others like the UK and Australia. My response makes me a sovereign citizen? Why does my Native status make me a sovereign citizen? Youve yet to explain that to me.

They simply ask u if youre a us citizen. Its yes or no.

Giving them a 5 minute roundabout about your tribes and their territories is how you get sovereign citizend one of these days

I dont , I simply say North American Indian and they say ok

If I have to explain further Ive literally documented to you how I respond. Is my response not to your liking?

Have I been asked further? Of course but again, Ive said, in detail how I have/would respond. These people have every right to stop me from crossing, I accept that and respond appropriately.

Damn, that's messed up. I'm pretty strongly against illegal immigration, but the way we conduct ourselves dealing with the problem reflects the values of our nation. We need to be better than this. Legal US citizens shouldn't fear deportation because our ICE agents are crazy and shit at their jobs.

Some states and cities like New Mexico have allowed illegals to obtain Driver IDs which have to lead to bullshit such as citizens needing passports just to fly to other states ugh

That leadership that allowed this nonsense is no longer there but the damage is still ongoing.

Yeah I definitely don't agree with that. We shouldn't be making it easier for illegals to stay here. Especially at the expense of US citizens.

So let me get this straight. My response of North American Indian isnt a simple response? Because its an acceptable response at the border for the most part, very rarely do I need to elaborate.

Im going to present you with a simple question.

Is North American Indian not a simple response?

Very simple, and in my experience, acceptable response. Is it not? And if Im asked to elaborate, I do. But is North American Indian not an accepted response to you? Simple question

Beyond that

Is North American Indian not a simple response?

Yes or no, simple question. If its not Ill happily explain to you once again why I respond the way I do.

So @Yao, is North American Indian not a simple response? And if not, explain why when Im more than willing to answer why it is. Explain yourself
