They got it so right with the other MCU movies then intentionally screwed up Peter Parkers supporting cast for the Spider-Man movies.

I dont like Aunt May being young and attractive. Thats not the Aunt May I know. I dont like the Flash being a geeky nerd. Thats not the Flash I know. And I dont like MJ not being a very attractive supermodel. Thats not the MJ I know either.

Peter Parker is fine. Its just the supporting cast I take issue with.

Flash is also a popular jock who is very skilled at playing football, able to get any girl he wants. A big man on campus, they used to call him in the comics.

New Flash is the complete opposite.

And real life Zendaya is small fry compared to the stardom that Mary Jane enjoys in the comics.

I like Zendaya. I had no issue with her being Mary Jane. I generally like the MJ character she plays in the movie, but they can drop the "she's not Mary Jane" thing. It's just pure having their cake and eating it to. Like they are right, she isn't Mary Jane and thus has no obligation to act like that character, but you don't get to create a character that is nothing like the classic Spider-Man character Mary Jane except for their shared nickname and then get to side-step people complaining that the character isn't like Mary Jane by saying "well she's not technically the same character." They gave their romantic interest the same nickname as the classic Spider-Man character. Of course people are going to make comparisons between the characters. It's obviously going to upset some people who are fans of the Mary Jane. And let's be real, there is no way they are going to introduce another MJ to the series by adding the classic Mary Jane.

Again, I have no issue with adding their own original character as Peter's love interest, but I don't like when they act dumb and say it isn't Mary Jane, because they know damn well what they were doing when they gave her the MJ nickname.

This change I actually have little issue with. MCU Flash is a more modern take on bullying. Yeah, the "classic" physical abuse bully still exist in the real world, but those are far over-shadowed by the "social" bully. Where the abuse is far more verbal or focused on socially ostracizing the victim than beating someone up. I understand that change.

As far as Aunt May goes, well some of my favorite changes in Ultimate Spider-Man was that Aunt May was more reasonably aged to be the aunt of a teenager and that she found out his identity relatively early. Classic Aunt May rarely felt like a character so much as she was a plot devise. Often times she was portrayed as a comically stereotypical old person, with almost zero awareness of the world around her. She was important to the reader because she was important to Peter, not because anyone particularly liked her. So even though it is different than classic Aunt May, I'm all aboard the Hot May train.

I think this is the crux of the matter. People don't realize just how dated Peter Parker's supporting cast is. It made sense in the 60's but it doesn't make sense for Peter to have that same environment in 2010s high school life. The world is different now. The culture is different now. Queens today is majority nonwhite so 2010s high school Peter is gonna have a more diverse peer group. Bullying is no longer all about being physically dominant and being great sports. Social bullying is more prevalent and anyone of any build can do that, provided he's popular enough. Transplanting Peter's classic cast into their classic roles into the modern day will feel anachronistic and take many people out of the movie.

They do but they are considerably less common than verbally abusive assholes. For the most part a lot of the jocks actually just hang out with other jocks. It's pretty uncommon for them to actively target someone in an entirely different social circle than themselves.

Even so, they completed screwed up the comic book character for the MCU. Doesnt look anything like him and barely acts anything like him.

Im not asking for realism in my comic book and cartoon adaptations, just stay true to the originals that people already know or love. People would accept a jerkass jock Flash because thats what he is known for. Doesnt matter that a jerkass jock bullying the nerd is pretty much outdated in real life, its still an accepted trope for movies.

The vast majority of the movie-going audience doesn't even care about Flash Thompson. Hell this is the first time the character has even had prominence on the big screen. I'd go as far to say even most of the Spider-Man comic fans don't have a lot of strong feelings about Flash because they know that the character is never getting much of a central arc. It's not like they are going to invest a ton of screen time into the Flash's redemption, alcoholism, amputees, or Venom plotlines. There just isn't enough time for that. So not getting a 100% accurate comic Flash isn't a giant loss.
