The history books are written by the winners, and they always "forget" to mention some things while other events are changed to make themself look better and the opponent look worse.
Which is why we are not learning in school that US Oil companies continued to sell oil to Nazi Germany even after USA joined the war, or that the Auschwitz tattoos were IBM numbers.
As for the Holocaust, yes it happened and yes, lies are told about it.
When I grew up, we learned that at least 4 million people were killed in the three Auschwitz camps.
The plaques at the International Monument at Birkenau even said that 4 million died at Auschwitz.
In 1995, these plaques were replaced by newer ones that only mentioned 1.5 million people.
But 1.5 million is not the official number of deaths at Auschwitz. The official estimate, currently given by the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum, is 1.1 million deaths.
Franciszek Piper, then current head of the Historical Department at the Auschwitz State Museum, decided to re-calculate the deaths back in 1980, and he published his result in 1986, that only 1,077,180 people had died in Auschwitz.
It took them over 9 years to change the numbers on the plaques, and even then they used a higher number.

In an 1897 census of the Russian empire, there were about 5.2 million jews recorded. Of course, the actual number might've been a bit higher.

The Tsar's antisemitic policies were well known and many feared that the forced relocation of jews would lead to mass starvation and genocide. With everything that's been said about the Nazis, it's easy to forget how violently antisemitic Russia was in those days.

The famous "Protocols of the Elders of Zion" was a fabrication that came from the Russian empire in the early 1900s and was used as a pretext by the Tsar to push forward the idea that the jewish people were somehow plotting world domination. There were very serious reasons to fear that a genocide was a possibility for the jews living in Russia. By the early 1910s, some jewish journalists in the US tried to raise the alarm. It turns out that, by then, a rough estimate of the amount of jews living in the Russian empire was about 6 million.

And so, you will find articles written in the 1910s that will say things such as "6 million jews are in peril of perishing" in Russia. It just so happens that the estimated amount of jews who were killed by the Nazis during the holocaust is about the same, 6 million.

The holocaust deniers jumped all over this. They have been able to convince a lot of people that somehow this is evidence that the holocaust is fabricated and that the jews have been talking about the holocaust before it happened. The sad reality is that it was true that 6 million jews were in danger of starvation and death due to the Tsar's policies. Holocaust denier websites are filled with scans of newspaper articles from before the Bolshevik revolution and some people who see those for the first time without being aware of the historical context fall right into the trap and start thinking that there might be something to it.

There's youtube videos of people pouring over those old papers and saying stuff like "oh my god... 6 million... they were saying 6 million back in 1915..." as if they somehow had an epiphany.

It's a mistake to underestimate the holocaust deniers. They did their research and have made an art form out of exploiting little historical coincidences and mixing them with blatant fabrications. Sadly, every day there are new people who fall for it.

In the end, it really can't be a coincidence that so many people who deny the holocaust happened are the very same people who would probably have been in favor of it.
