I just beat Shining Force II (Gen) -- 4/10 Took me just under 80 hrs to beat it, many hours added due to running a playthrough topic.

My overall opinion of the game can be boiled down to the tedious, boring battles. The enemy AI is probably one of the easiest to program, as if you weren't within range, the vast majority of their troops would stay stock still or pace back and forth, or there seemed to be a "sphere of influence" where 2 or 3 of them would start to slowly advance on you if one of your troops entered that sphere. So, battles became slowly moving around the battlefield, triggering the small groups to start moving, and then just waiting until they were in range and pouncing. So, the hardest battles end up simply requiring you to be extremely patient and cycling through your troops for several minutes until the new set of enemies got into striking range. With battles taking on average probably 60 to 90 min, it completely overshadows the town aspect. I also really didnt like how experience is determined, as it is based on how much damage you do, creating a rich-get-richer scenario and making it extremely difficult for the low level characters to catch up in levels. I tried leveling up the trio at Creeds Mansion that I didnt originally take, but other than the Priest Karna, after probably 10 battles, the two fighters couldnt even sniff level 10. I cant help but compare it to Dark Wizard on Sega CD, which released a month later in Japan, and Dark Wizard blows this game away. The old hag at the title screen really became annoying, having to advance through about a half dozen screens of text before being able to load a game. I cant give this game a positive score.

I voted for Punch Out. It can be a quicker game since it largely comes down to pattern recognition.

As for Shining Force II, 60-90 minutes per battle seems excessive. Battles would become longer near the end of the game, but most of them were like 20-30 minutes. Also, while higher damage contributes to higher experience rewards, the biggest experience payouts come from getting a kill. So it would all come down to just setting up an enemy for a weaker ally to kill.

Did you get Slade to turn into a killing machine? He sucks at first, but if you promote him, he becomes really good.

That's what I figured would win.

The later battles when you start fighting the major demons skew the average time. Yes, I know you get more exp from a kill. That's extremely obvious. But it's kind of hard to set up the kill for someone that's doing 1 point of damage. I was trying to level all characters, so I didn't stick with Slade much.

Well, it has a good chance with the current 4-way tie.

One of these days, I envision there will be nothing but Atari 2600 and Intellivision games and a book, and the book will win.
The only AW game I've played is Days of Ruin, and I didn't particularly care for it.

If it wins, I'll find out first hand if the NES Classic has too much lag to beat this game. I've beaten Tyson many times on an actual NES and CRT.

Voted for Oddworld. As far as the Shakespeare's concerned, it's better to see the plays performed rather than just reading them - that is, after all, the use for which they were created.
