Beethoven, Lassie, Littlest Hobo, Clifford, or Wishbone, though people born after 2000 probably won't know who they are.

If there's someone more famous, it's probably Goofy or Pluto.

Some people mention Scooby but I dunno about that, he seems to be a more remote chance.

So even you yourself admit they're disqualified.

Seriously, even Spike and Odie would be more famous than them despite not being the main characters of their own work.

Pretty sure they are. Sure some of them have real animals playing the part, but they are fictional dogs. Now, if we are talking about Cartoon dogs then I'd argue Clifford, and Odie have to be up there.

I mean they're not contenders as in they're not near as known as snoopy, scooby, goofy, and Pluto

Lassie is. If you asked people to name famous dogs, Lassie would be early on that list.

none of the ones you mentioned are anyway close to being as famous as Snoopy

and Snoopy being created in 1950 is older than all of those except lassie

Snoopy was a WWI flying Ace who was so renowned he received a Christmas pardon from Baron von Richthofen. Even the Red Baron would not take out a fellow ace who was unfortunate enough to have ice on his wings.

And that's just the begin of Snoopy's many claims to fame.
Let the rest lie down beside there bowls.

Ever been to the Snoopy museum in Roppongi? I went just because Im from Minnesota (as was Charles Schultz) and happened to see it when I went to the Philippine Embassy.

Its pretty expensive and not really worth it but it does feature a frankly absurd amount of the comic strips (all in English too). I went during February, so they had a valentines theme where they focused on the couples in the comic. It was interesting to learn that Charles Schultz modeled the LRHG after an unrequited love of his.

Anyway, its Snoopy or Goofy honestly, and I would say that Snoopy edges Goofy out just because almost every other main Mickey Mouse character, to include Chip, Dale and possibly even Daisy is more popular among adults than Goofy.

Cheers, for even know who that is in this discussion. And ya Snoopy/Peanuts have a true quality to it...not always just a cartoon. Or comic, something like Clavin and Hobbs.

I especially appreciate that Charles Schultz was never condescending to his audience.
