My family is from China. I live there 1-2 months of every year. They would literally slap you for even suggesting the US is as bad as China. You have no idea what it was like to live during the Great Leap Forward or the Cultural Revolution. Simply having a college education got you publicly executed by flash mobs. Everyone was starving.

Even now, children get run over on the streets and nobody will stop to help them because the government is so corrupt and inept, there's a good chance the person who helped the child will be labeled the attacker because the police force is too lazy to investigate.

You can literally wake up one day and find out your house will be bulldozed in 24 hours, and the government gives you an apartment worth 1/10th the value in recompense.

Your own internet posts can be deleted or edited by the government. The stupidest shit is banned (stories with time travel, because they might glorify pre-Party China) and can get you thrown in jail.

In the big cities, they have 2nd world countries appearance with 3rd world country management & China quality stuff.

You just have to google up "China Quality" and all the products & stuff that randomly blows up, breaks down, or falls apart.

Any fatality that can in any way be tied to the government's failure in oversight (Ex - the melamine baby formula milk scandal, or the Jiangxi dam bursting) results in the government going ballistic, finding some scapegoats, publicly sentencing them to death or life imprisonment, then patting itself on the back as the "protector of the people"
