Usually updates go much faster but they're doing an over the air update today for a lot of people that put off the last point update so the servers are probably just bogged, bad timing.

That's just the initial setup, don't listen to these people who never owned an iPhone.

My first iCloud backup took like an hour but after that it literally took about a minute

And congrats. The XR looks nice but I just love my regular X too much right now.

It'll backup automatically whenever it's charging for a long time, so probably at night. You can also do it manually

Keyword, "typically". Sometimes it forgets a day and even when it doesn't, it won't restore your layouts identically depending on the launcher you're running. But I digress.
