Like in the classic holiday car commercial cliche where it's just in the driveway and they come out of the house to surprise the wife or whoever

No only does that seems like something only a rich douchebag would do, but it completely ignores the logistical nightmare that is car-buying and also how exactly does it just show up in the driveway without the person noticing

The bloke could just buy it in the middle of the night, drive it into the driveway, or keep the recipient pre-occupied at another venue while driving the car there.

Car dealerships aren't like 7-Elevens my bloke.

I'd think that when they returned they would notice the car there, even if they had like a back garage entrance. I'm imagining a scenario where they were already in the house and walk out to a car they somehow didn't know about; commercials show this (I think).

Not that I'm saying it's impossible to pull off but so much about it seems absurd to me

They could have a friend deliver it early in the morning before they wake up. Or even after, and they wouldnt go outside until they received a text from said friend. Or, if they have an empty garage like not built into the house. Or if they have a garage, but dont go in that way. Lots of ways, honestly.

I was just talking about this with my friend while we were watching TV. Who are these commercials catered to? I can't imagine anyone is going to see a commercial and rush down to the dealer to buy one right away.

I think its more for the people thinking about a car, but not sure what to get. Or like they may hear about a feature and just remember it when thinking about where to go. Like if a parent wanted to buy their child a car and remembered a commercial talking about one that has the brake assist or something. Also, sometimes, when people are shopping around, they remembered seeing a car/truck they saw on tv that they liked. And decided to go to the dealership to see if they had it at an affordable price. And if someone is looking, but are on a budget, a sale might nudge them to go to a specific dealership. But I dont think it influences a high percentage of people. But people arent always looking for a vehicle. Since I dont need a vehicle, the commercials dont appeal to me. But maybe they do to someone whos in the market for one...

If one were to be a "rich douchebag" car buying is no longer a hassle. Having it delivered early that morning is also something that could easily be arranged for some who has enough money to be placed in the rich douchebag category.

No. I bought both my Silverados because I like trucks. I bought my Infiniti QX4 because it was in great condition for the year, and I bought my Civic for the same reason, plus it was a manual. I'm saving for an RX-7.

A Tesla self-driving car commercial convinced me to buy a self-driving car. (when I'm rich, of course)

That was actually reasonable, though. I didn't look at a commercial and go, "You know what? That overpriced oversized gas-guzzling mortgage loan looks really good driving next to that cliff. I'm going to buy it."

Cars are meant to get you from point A to point B imo. It doesn't matter what it looks like, it doesn't matter how fast it goes, it doesn't matter how many you have unless you're bleeding money.

I'd take Ubers everywhere if the drivers would stop being super annoying and forcing a conversation for 20 minutes, where I talk about the same fucking thing I talk about every time I talk to an Uber driver.

It's just intended to be something that sticks in peoples' minds and gets them more likely to think about the dealership when they decide to look for a car. If you're the first dealership they visit, the odds of you selling will be better. Most areas have a lot of dealerships and people looking for a car don't even visit most of them.

I know a single mum chick at work who could easily pass for a model that has a partner of a few years with loads of money who bought her a new car with a bow on it as a birthday present.

They didn't deliver it though, they went in and surprised her. No matter how hot she is she better be putting out good for a free car.

Not anymore, but this.

First job in high school was moving cars from one lot to the main lot and vice versa.

People did it at the very least weekly. You could either rent the bow or purchase it for something crazy like $1000.
