Japan confirms it will quit IWC to resume commercial whaling
Japan is to leave the International Whaling Commission and resume commercial whaling for the first time in more than 30 years, the government said on Wednesday, in a move that has drawn international criticism.

The countrys fleet will resume commercial operations in July next 2019, the governments chief spokesman, Yoshihide Suga, said of the decision to defy the 1986 global ban on commercial whaling.

Australia urges Japan to remain in IWC after its bid to lift whaling ban rejected

Suga told reporters the countrys fleet would confine its hunts to Japanese territorial waters and exclusive economic zone, adding that its controversial annual expeditions to the Southern Ocean a major source of diplomatic friction between Tokyo and Canberra would end.

Would you object to trying whale meat? Do you think it is irresponsible for Japan to resume whaling?

I've had whale meat in Japan. It's fine, but like not something I'd go out of my way to get. I don't see many Japanese people eating it either, like it's very rare, so I'm not sure why they're whaling so much.

I don't necessarily object to eating whale meat, but I object when the whaling is fucking up the ecosystem and endangering species.

I live in Japan and do not eat whale which is pretty widely available where I live. That said, I am fine with Japan doing this because the IWC has decided to ignore all science and data related to sustainable whaling forcing Japan to join other whaling nations like Iceland and Norway in leaving. If the IWC doesn't want sustainable whaling to exist, because it objects to all whaling for any reason it shouldn't be surprised nations that want to continue eating whale won't be involved. It's really quite foolish because Japan provided them with a very decent proposal last year and they rejected it because they just want to ban whaling.

It's not rare, it's just not very popular so it's quite cheap actually. We also don't whale so much, we whale less than Norway despite being much larger.

I meant like it's rare that a lot of Japanese people would eat it regularly. Not that the whale meat is rare to find.

Minke whales are not declining and number over 500,000 to 2 million depending on the estimate, and Japan is harvesting less than 500 a year.

I hope you hypocrites know that Pigs and Whales share similar biology and thinking processes. So most whale studies were actually done on pigs too prove how overly intelligent they are.

You know Pigs who can play video games, make choices, paint pictures, and cry and scream when they see their parents slaughtered and know they are next while they shit and piss them selves in fear.

You know pigs which are endlessly more intelligent than dogs and cats.

You are fine with chopping them up and eating them in billions.

But 500 whales a year for Japan is too much.

You all are morally disgusting, and only pretend to care when it matchs how you live.

Good on them, the outrage at Japanese whaling has always been absurd.

Now the next question is how do we keep Japan on the straight and narrow where without international oversight they don't hunt endangered species, cause I don't trust people and governments not to do that.

We raise millions of pigs for slaughter, and they reproduce very quickly. There isn't a shortage of farm pigs and those kind of pigs aren't endemic to the US. Cetaceans are very slow to mature and reproduce very slowly.

IWC brought it on themselves by refusing to let Japan harvest whales in numbers less than other countries that whale. It's absolutely ridiculous how Japan got singled out to not be allowed to whale when so many other countries (all mysteriously populated by Europeans) are allowed to do so without censure. Japan will harvest under 500 whales a year from a species of at least over 500,000 (possibly in the millions). That's less than .1%.

Why is it okay for countries with white people to whale and not Japan? Why does Japan, the only whaling country that followed the rules get singled out for leaving rather than ignoring the rules or exploiting different loopholes like other countries do? I mean isn't it weird that Japan doesn't take the most whales of any country by raw numbers and is among the lowest as a percent of population yet all the hate goes toward Japan? What is it that makes people hate them so much and forgive all the white countries?

I don't even eat meat, but the hypocrisy makes me sympathetic to Japan's plight.
