No, it's easy AF to set up and it just makes more sense when you can own something instead of paying 15 bucks a month for that same thing. It pays for itself in less than a year.

Lots of people do this.

what was the process like? buy it, plug it in, call them up and have them detect it?

Pretty sure you just plug it in. It uses the same exact cords that the isp already has set up.

i have Spectrum. i don't think they give you any break on your bill if you supply your own modem. never really looked into it though. i do have my own wireless router.

I have Spectrum and they do. You're gonna have to call anyways to let them know when setting it up.

Don't know if it's different if you have an existing connection, but they don't need much configuration. Mine was ready to go out of the box

This is how it works with Time Warner.

I've had to call once or twice to have them set it up. It's usually some soccer mom at home with her crying two year old and she types some stuff in and it activates.

Yeah, I had to call my ISP (Time Warner) and read them the MAC address so they could add it to their network. Took like 2 minutes and wasn't any trouble.

Yeah but for ATT something. They had to come to my house to install a new line and gave me a modem but I replaced it after a few months, sent theirs back, and had them give me the info I needed to get it working. The one I bought doesn't reset as often and I no longer need to pay to rent theirs
