The man and her are clearly a couple but due to it being set in the 1940s society would expect her not to stay over night with a man she is not married too.

Notice the whole song the man wants to warm her up and keep her warm since she is cold when she comes to see him. Then the snow gets worse and he wants his sweetheart to stay so she does not get pneumonia and die. He clearly is in love with her and she clearly loves him but does not want society or her family to gossip about her staying over night at her boyfriends.

Lots of people including myself didn't even know this song until somebody started protesting it and brought attention to it. And I love the song. It's catchy.
