A junior doctor hanged himself in a hospital where he had just started a new job after struggling to understand the IT system

Eduard Zigar, 25, was found in a store room by his colleagues two days after killing himself. The Lithuanian medic had only worked three shifts in the upper gastrointestinal unit at Birminghams Queen Elizabeth Hospital before his body was found at 10.30pm on August 27. He had started the job just five days earlier.

CCTV showed him walking around the hospital for more than an hour before he walked into a store room in the Ambulatory Care Unit at 6.59pm. When he failed to turn up for his shift the next day, staff thought it was a rota error and did not raise the alarm. His worried parents called later that day because they had not heard from him but staff were unable to find him on the hospital system due to a spelling error of his name. Instead, his distraught parents were advised to contact police and make a missing persons report.

Consultant Dr John Whiting, who supervised Dr Zigar, said: The doctors who worked with him said he was a good, capable doctor so thats why we offered him a post. I thought he was a very pleasant person, a little bit nervous which was not unusual for someone who had just started. Eduard was struggling a little to find his way around the IT systems. Birmingham and Solihull Senior Coroner Louise Hunt recorded a verdict of suicide following an inquest on Friday.

She said: While he may have appeared nervous and not fully-familiar with the IT system, there was nothing unusual about that. There were no signs that something so terribly serious was going to happen. He worked on Saturday, August 25. There were no untoward incidents during that shift but he was noted to be quiet and detached. Grande Tema SBS in control off Essex coast this morning.

He finished his shift around 5pm. He left his bleeper on the desk. Officially, he hadnt been expected to finish until later, but we heard how there had been a bit of a mix-up with the rota and so everyone assumed he had gone because of that mix-up.

It wasnt until August 27 at around 10pm that he was found by Mohammed Ali in the store room at the rear of the Ambulatory Care Unit. Doctor found hanged in hospital Birmingham's Coroners Court Dr Zigars death was ruled as suicide

It was clear to Dr Gareth Richards [one of the doctors who attended the scene] that he had been dead for some time. The police attended. They did not find any evidence to support any third party being involved in his death, or any suspicious circumstances.

The medical cause of death is hanging. For me to reach a verdict of suicide, I have to find on the balance of probabilities that he undertook a deliberate act that resulted in his death and he intended it that way and all other reasonable explanations have been ruled out. I will be recording a verdict of suicide. I realise that may be very upsetting for the family, but I have to abide by the law. Speaking through an interpreter, Dr Zigars mother Julia, who attended the hearing, said:

Eduard was an extremely good person. He was tolerant, loving and he loved life very much. I last had contact with him on August 24. I texted him again on August 25 but I did not receive any response from him. It was about him coming back [to Lithuania] on September 1. There was never any indication of him having mental health problems or wanting to harm himself. It came as a massive shock to us. He was an extremely religious person and it would not be in accordance with the religion he followed. We were [previously] discussing [suicide] in our family, and we couldnt accept that in our family.
