The second genie in the Arabian Nights movie from the 90s is black, so it doesn't seem that weird, especially given the region.
Out of Marvel, Lucasfilm, Pixar/Animated, and Pictures (live actions), the live action division has been bombing for years. Guess they're just gonna run through the entire catalog at this point. Of course, this Genie is very different than the one that fans fell in love with back in the '90s, but that's okay. Director Guy Ritchie was well aware that he could never recreate the magic of Robin Williams, so he decided to go in a completely different direction.
