As other have said, don't pay the debt collector unless they have proof. I was fucked over hard once upon a time when a landlord decided I owed him about $2000 for damages that was handed over to collections only to find out form a lawyer that I didn't have to pay them.

If she had insurance she would have just been screwing the insurance companies because they would pay the hospital more than she paid them. SMH

when moving from the apartment gotta have proof you paid up to the month for the time you lived in dwelling. and then take pictures after you leave the apartment so you have proof it wasn't trashed when you left.

I wonder what kind of proof they would need

Records of hospital visit and services performed.

How it works though is the hospital doesn't give them that as it is not legal for the hospital to give them that. Medical records are confidential.

They sell a debt and that is all. Basically the debt collector knows most people are too scared to challenge them and know they owe something, so they wind up paying.

The hospital sells it because that means they get money quicker.

All the debt collector gets is your name and address and that you owe some money. Nothing more.

So in court you can ask for proof of that amount they claim you owe. I mean, that is reasonable to ask someone.

You say I owe you 2000. What for? I want it itemized.

The debt collector can't do that and thus how can the court rule you do owe them that?

She had to have emergency surgery while working two jobs, and got stuck with a 25k bill.

If it's such a small amount, why doesn't she just pay it? Especially if she's already been paying it down for two years, in which case it must be next to nothing by now.

Not sure if serious.
