Is there such a thing?

My gf got sick a couple years ago, and ended up with thousands of dollars of debt.

Anything she can do besides paying or bankruptcy?

Yeah they absolutely can send it to collections. You can also try to work out a payment plan with the hospital.

You can always try and renegotiate or try and get them to forgive the debt.

gotta continue paying or declare bankruptcy. it would clear medical care debt but screw up the credit it's only useful if it's debt that is far more than what you'll pay in a lifetime.

Its been a couple years and its been sold to a debt collection agency?

Go on credit karma and file a dispute saying you do not recognize the account and require validation that the amounts are correct.

Usually after the debt has changed hands a few times the paperwork is long lost and because of the fair credit reporting act (assuming youre in the us) the burden of proof is in them to show your girlfriend agreed to pay said amounts. Usually the cant find it, nor will they be able to find where your gf signed agreeing to pay her original debt plus extra fees to whatever debt collection agency bought her debt lol. From there they are legally required to drop the debt.

They do it to themselves. Try it, if they say no then negotiate with them to a lower price.

Don't pay debt collector.

Debt collectors have no proof of your debt and if they take you to court, they can't prove you owe a dime.

Listen to this npr podcast:
https://www.thisamericanlife.org/532/magic-words

https://blog.credit.com/2014/08/words-that-could-get-you-out-of-paying-a-debt-94207/

That said, try to work it out with the hospital.
Sometimes the debt collector is a fake one and it is actually the hospital trying to make you pay faster.

After 7 years, the debt will disappear as long as she makes no attempt to pay them. If she agrees to pay anything, the 7 years resets.

But when it comes to medical debt, you pretty much NEVER have to pay what's on the bill. Tell the hospital it is an impossible cost for you, and negotiate down to a way lesser price and for payment. Whatever payment you agree to is likely higher than what the collections agency would pay for the debt.

That is a possibility, but not an inevitability. At least in Texas. I had debt from a broken lease sent to collections, did nothing, nothing happened, and it disappeared as if it was never there. The only downside other than the obvious temporary ding on my score was making it harder to rent because it was in the same category. That's it.

Looked it up. Didn't think that it was a state-by-state thing but it is true where I live. From google:

"The state of Texas is unique among states when it comes to wage garnishment laws. ... Generally speaking, the only debts for which a debtor's wages can be garnished are unpaid student loans, taxes, child support, and alimony. Wage Garnishment Defined. In Texas wage garnishments are commonly referred to as wage attachments."

TC may live somewhere with the same law, but admittedly I don't know. But if it does, since it is medical debt it wouldn't qualify for wage garnishment.

The entire world benefits from our medical advances and innovations. There is a cost to all that and unfortunately our own citizens bear the burden. Fortunately though, you never have to pay your entire medical bill and there is a pretty high degree of flexibility.

To clarify, I am talking about when the hospital still owns the debt. I explicitly said this in an earlier post. Debt collectors typically have absolutely zero flexibility.

Don't call.debt collectors. Don't pay them.
Let em take you to court and ask them to prove the amount you owe and why you owe it.

They will not be able to and the case will be dropped.
