This past weekend, I rented a car in Vegas and drove to the Grand Canyon. In Arizona, I got a speeding ticket, apparently going 106 in a 65 zone. Police officer wouldn't let me off with just a warning despite my protest and pleading; she said the best she can do is make it a civil traffic ticket (vs. criminal), and let me do an online driving course. After completing the online driving course, I'm to call the court, and they will dismiss the ticket. Nothing will show on my record.

So now, I have to do this 4 hour online driving course... and it costs like $200! Bleh...

Yea, my defensive gear (radar detector and laser jammer) were at home... next time I'm definitely bringing my radar detector (laser jammer is permanently installed so can't take that with me).

^ This is truth. If I recall correctly, if you do 10+ posted or over 80mph, it's a felony. And they don't even allow radar detectors/laser jammers. For a conservative state, it seems very weird they'd have these controlling laws.

As someone who lives in Northern AZ, it is SO easy and fun to drive really fast. I regularly go at least 90. And the posted limit is usually 75.

But the highway cops here are sticklers, and you were lucky they even went easy on you tbh.

it's a misdemeanor, but you're correct about everything else. It's also the highest class of misdemeanor, so it's alongside crimes like assault

Yes, this sounds appropriate.

Not to say I have never broken 100 before, I've done it once just to experience it, but it was just for a moment, while I was pretty much alone on the highway and already going over 80 just from momentum/gravity while going down a long, straight hill. So I pushed the gas a tiny bit more just to break 100, said "nifty," and then began decelerating back to responsible speeds.

I couldn't really imagine doing it for any extended period on flat ground.

Seriously though I've driven through the desert outside L.A. (Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico) and hit triple digits before. IIRC the limit is 75 so you can get away with 80 or so. Never been caught but they can take your license if you're a certain amount above the limit. Coulda been worse.

Arizona cops are the worst in my experience.

One time I was really sleepy and was swerving in my lane. Got pulled over and was given a DUI test, stand on one foot, walk the line, breathe into cops nose, passed all that and the best he could do was tell me to get some rest at the next town, guess swerving all over the place isn't a crime if you're not drunk, win for me.

Why not tell you to just pull over to the shoulder or something and take a nap? I've done that a couple times in long road trips.

I wouldn't recommend that, especially in the desert. I did it once and two shady, skinny guys tapped on my window and asked me what I had in mind - with smirks on their faces. No one around for miles. All I had in mind was Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Deliverance. I GTFO there.
