It bothers me so much when nurses and doctors don't push down their gowns in the garbage cans of patient rooms. They literally let gloves and gowns hang out of the garbage or fall on the floor. If a patient is staying at the hospital for an extended period of time - then that room is basically their HOME for the time being. You don't go to someone else's house and just throw crap at their garbage can and hope it gets in.

I also hate when people don't close the supply/contact closets outside of patient rooms. Same idea. It's like leaving a cabinet open in a house and looks super trashy.

I hate when people are shopping and people decide not to buy items and just throw them anywhere. I used to work in grocery retail and people would put raw meat on veggies, ice cream in beverage fridges, bacon on top of checkout lane gum boxes, etc. It's sooo trashy and disrespectful to the workers, and it wastes product in the examples I gave. Blatant egocentrism.

I cannot stand people driving through parking spots. There are lines to direct traffic for a reason. I've almost gotten in accidents because I'm pulling out and suddenly sportsmom SUV comes flying through like 10 rows of parking spots and I almost hit her.

I hate busy traffic intersections and when people go in the middle of the intersection waiting for it to turn red or block the intersection in any way -- especially when it does not allow perpendicular traffic to move once they're allowed. So selfish.

On the topic of traffic again - I also hate when people turn too sharp and go over the line. Like just because someone's not there right NOW doesn't mean you can just turn lazily and go where you would've hit someone. Learn to color in the fucking lines.

I hate when I'm a passenger and people try and make left turns onto busy roads without a light. Just turn right, turn left further ahead and turn around! Why are you risking my life and wasting time just because you're stubborn.

I hate bad tippers. I hate people who don't tip delivery drivers especially.

It really pisses me off when foodstuffs get contaminated with other foodstuffs. Crumbs in spreads (or other spreads in spreads) is one that's far too common.

Also, I can't stand imperfectly-cleaned dishes / cookware. To the point where it's pretty much a rule here that no one but me washes dishes (unless they're being washed to be used right away afterwards, in which case I don't give a shit because it'll be back in the dirty pile for me to wash, rather than going in with the actually-clean stuff). My gf is pretty happy with that rule (understandably), but we've had guests who really can't get something that simple - that doesn't even require any effort on their part - through their heads... >_>

I hate when I'm in an office, work space, or clerical setting and there are pen marks or bits of tape still on tables/desks. I think it looks incredibly trashy, unkempt, and unprofessional.

I hate when I'm at grocery stores and they make no effort at merchandising, eg. Meijer, Costco, etc. Like literally just plopping boxes down in produce and hardly even rotating anything. I want to shop at a grocery store/market -- not a warehouse. Again - trashy and unprofessional.

I hate self checkouts and people who fervently defend them.

I hate it when people talk too much during board gaming and then take forever on their turns. You should be spending others peoples' turns anticipating yours and planning ahead.

I agree about the dishes/cookware. I'm usually busy/tired nowadays and don't clean to my own standard, since I usually rush through and sometimes catch imperfections myself -- but this is exactly why I refuse to use a dish washer.

I don't mind dishwashers, actually. Unless they're faulty (which can usually be spotted a mile away) or the water isn't properly heated, I've never seen one fail to clean even the toughest of dirt off stuff.

It's other human washers I'm distrusting of.

I think, like I said, it's disrespectful to the patient.
But it happens SO often. Depending on what shift I do -- I can visit dozens of patient rooms in a day, and it's like 99% of the time I need to shove down the gowns.
I had a coworker who's in nursing school right now tell me that they teach them not to -- because there could be needles or something? But unless there's fucking Excalibur chilling in the garbage can -- I don't see how a huge bundle of gown, while you're still wearing gloves, is going to be penetrated by a rogue needle.

First off -- shouldn't needles be in a sharps container or be disposed of in a different way? Second of all - you're bundling the gown into something the size of like a basket ball and you're just pushing it down slightly - at least enough so that there aren't straps hanging out of the edge of the can. You're not slamma-a-jamming it and pushing it down like Streets of Rage.

Self checkouts take away jobs -- and people take forever. Sensor doesn't calculate the weight right? Red light! Someone puts their pop into their cart? Red light! Can't find x item's plu? Let me sit here ten minutes trying to find it! This register doesn't take cash? Whoops! Gotta do a different register. Let me play with my kid instead of scanning items -- or text between scanning.

The solution are Express lanes. They were the solution before and still are.

The first two points are the only valid ones here.

Regarding taking away jobs, surely you've noticed how self-checkouts have only started to become common in response to (successful) demands for higher pay and benefits getting out of control? Self-checkouts don't have to be paid a minimum wage that's ridiculously excessive for the actual job they're doing, or be given a whole bunch of work-related benefits.

In regards to people taking forever, the counterargument there is the fact that you can generally fit more self-checkouts in the same amount of space as you could of regular checkouts, which balances this out. If the average shopper needs twice as long on a self-service, but there's four times as many checkouts, the result is still a 50% reduction in waiting time. This is especially a big deal during the short bursts of busyness that often occur in the middle of otherwise-dead days, where it'd be really unrealistic to bring extra staff in for just 30 minutes to deal with it - you can easily fire up a self-serve though.

The rest of your post is generally taking worst-case scenarios and describing them as if they're an everyday occurance.

bundle the gown into the size of a basketball? i'm starting to believe you don't even work in healthcare. They come in a little folded packet about the size of a wallet. You can squish down a trashcan full of them to half its size or less. And even if you're being lazy and only pushing it down 10% or whatever every time as you're claiming... the needle could be in that 10%.

Of course it should be in the sharps container. It would be a mistake if it's not.

You peel off a gown - there's air. It's relatively large. You have gloves on. If it's droplet you could also have a mask between the gown, your gloves, and your hand. You're using the gown and mask to push it down. Maybe not even as far as it'll go -- just far enough so you're not a disrespectful schmuck

I understand WHY you're doing it. But you're acting like there's no risk involved even when the information is spelled out for you clearly. Holding a thin plastic gown in the palm of your hand does NOT protect your entire hand and arm from being stuck by a needle if you choose to insert it into a waste container that could potentially contain used needles. Imagine if the needle were facing up to the side of where you place your hand into the can and push down - it would flip over and penetrate the top/side of your hand or arm.

I think if your goal were truly to help patients, and not just insult your coworkers and feel superior to them by taking unnecessary risks, you would use an instrument besides your hand to compact the trash into the trash cans.

I use the gown. And i am aware of what/ where I'm pushing. At the very least, though, people could make sure gown straps aren't hanging out of the garbage or gloves weren't on the floor. They don't even do that.

Also, as you said, that's not proper disposal of needles. Should you not shove down garbage in public, either -- since you run the risk of strangers germs or drug needles or glass or whatever?
