Honestly most of the people I know who don't drink or never have are overall better people than those I know who do drink.

More for me. But I've got a lot of friends who don't drink. I usually join em at the bar for some orange juice or water.

most adults who don't drink are not shut-ins who are pretending to have a sour grapes take on social experiences they never had

they're socially active people who used to participate in drinking culture, and chose to end their drinking in order to preserve and maintain their social connections and romantic relationships

my father went through exactly one session of marriage counseling. his first wife told him she wanted him to stop drinking. he said "No." she said "Then I want a divorce."

that story stuck with me.

You think they would have talked about whether or not drinking was acceptable before they got married.

it was a 20-year marriage.

they were both drinkers when they got married. his became uncontrolled and unmoderated, hers did not.

I have maybe 6 beers over the course of a year now.

I did all my drinking when I was 21-24 and I'm kind of over it. I know alcoholism runs in my family and I know I am the type of person who can become easily addicted to some things.

I choose not to drink.

Someone mentioned the 'holier than thou' type, but I would say drinkers who look down on others are far worse.

What frustrates me is the ones who won't let it go.

Most topics, you can be politely dismissive and people are ok with it, but for whatever reason when it comes to alcohol, you'll fill up from the water cooler and it's

"You don't drink?"
"Nah."
"Why not?"
"Just not for me."
"Well what have you tried?"
"Had a glass of white wine once, just tasted like ethanol to me."
"Must have been cheap stuff."
"I guess."
"You should try _____."
"Nah I think I'll just stick to water."
"No really it's pretty good stuff."
"Well there's also the thing where I don't want to get addicted." (What I was trying to avoid saying)
"Why do you think you'll get addicted?"

Ughhhhh shut up and let me drink my damn water

Classic addict behavior though, trying to pressure everyone around them into doing it to feel justified in doing it themselves. Reminds me of the cliche anti-smoking commercials you used to see surrounding peer pressure.

Yea I mean its one thing to try and convince them to try something better but dont be annoying like that. Like if you told me I dont like chocolate and I asked you what you tried and you said oh just some cheap ass 99 cent store stuff that was expired and tasted like garbage I might say oh you should try...but if you said no Id just be like oh ok.

I get really annoyed at the people who are determined to get me drunk. Like they've made it their life goal to do so.

Next person that does that though, I'm going to tell them I'll go drinking of they agree to do something I enjoy that they've never done, then give their wife or girlfriend or whatever a strap on and tell them to go to town on their hubby/bf.

See how fast they take it back

I mean, if its because they do weed, its hypocritical.
If its for medical reasons, thats fine.
But there really isnt a lot of reasons to be against it outside of addictive personality
