I'm more left than I've been in my life the last two years, still pretty middle of the spectrum, but I just cannot identify with outrage culture, SJWs and shit like that.

Its completely bonkers

In short: not as "date rapey" as people think it is, but it's also too bizarre a subject for a Christmas song.

It was never a Christmas song. It's a scene from a rom-com about a South American polo player trying to hit it with a WASP swimsuit designer. The joke is that he's singing it to her in an apartment in Los Angeles in the middle of the summer, so it's obviously a lame excuse to keep her their.

Yes. It's from "Neptune's Daughter" starring Ricardo Montalban, Ester Williams, Red Skelton, and Betty Garrett.

The lyrics from the male side are generic 'but please stay!' stuff.

The lyrics from the female side are 'I should leave but I wanna fuck his brains out'.

It's about two people who both know they shouldn't,but they're gonna.

Filmed 5 years after the song was written.

Lyrics have a winter theme. Christmas... winter... ya get it?

I really can't stay, baby it's cold outside
I've got to go away, baby it's cold outside
The evening has been, been hoping that you'd drop in
So very nice, I'll hold your hands, they're just like ice

My mother will start to worry, beautiful, what's your hurry?
Father will be pacing the floor, listen to the fireplace roar
So really I'd better scurry, beautiful, please don't hurry
Maybe just a half a drink more, put some records on while I pour

The neighbors might think, baby, it's bad out there
Say, what's in this drink, no cabs to be had out there
I wish I knew how, your eyes are like starlight now
To break this spell, I'll take your hat, your hair looks swell

I ought to say no, no, no - Mind if I move in closer?
At least I'm gonna say that I tried - What's the sense in hurting my pride?
I really can't stay - Baby don't hold out
Ah, but it's cold outside

I've got to get home, oh, baby, you'll freeze out there
Say, lend me your coat, it's up to your knees out there
You've really been grand, thrill when you touch my hair
Why don't you see, how can you do this thing to me?

There's bound to be talk tomorrow, think of my life long sorrow
At least there will be plenty implied, if you caught pneumonia and died
I really can't stay, get over that hold out
Ah, but it's cold outside
Oh, baby, it's cold outside
Oh, baby, it's cold outside

on one hand, I think that historical context is always appreciated. on the other, we also have to acknowledge that society marches on
I know what she's saying when she asks what's in the drink, but we live in the era of date rape and bill cosby. maybe it's time to give it a rest

I do think it's catchy though and wouldn't call to ban it

Yes, but the song was only sung at studio parties to entertain guests. A couple of studio contract actors would sing it in front of the other guests near the end of the party. A studio head asked the songwriter if they could use it for a film, and he agreed to it. This was the first time the general public ever heard the song, and it came out on record soon after by other artists.

It was made in the 40s and flirting was different back then.

Even today it still comes off as teasing. Hell I've heard some versions where she decides to stay after all

It's the first song I get sick of hearing over the holidays. That said, it's stupid to ignore historical context and get offended by it.

On a one to one level I agree, but I don't hear that one too often anymore while I can't go 2 hours without some different cover of Baby it I dare to put on the Christmas music station. It isn't the tune. It's the frequency.
