He felt that because of who his father was, he also didn't get a choice, that he was forced into the life he was living. He felt that he had to follow in his father's footsteps, in one way, to be closer to him, in another, to step out of his father's shadow, and then maybe his mother would love him. Considering all of this, his upbringing, status, and emotional conflict, and then send him to a place where none of that matters. He's lost. Everything that he has taken for granted is gone. There is no going back to that life. This is devastating. If that weren't enough, Jecht is a hero there too. Literally the only thing he doesn't lose is his father's shadow, as big as ever. Straight back to the root of his problem. He's whiny because he could be in Zanarkand. Who was going to tell him otherwise? Living your whole life one way, and then everything completely changes, that takes adjustment. Old habits die hard, as they say, and it took him some time.
