Everyone seems to go on & on about 4K TV's & 4K gaming becoming the next big thing, but I don't see either of them going to take over Native 1080p in either games or on TV's.

For one, many people still own Native 1080p HDTV's & computer monitors. Heck, most players on Steam still play games in Native 1080p w/60 FPS with high max settings.

Also, many people aren't looking forward to upgrading their current TV sets to 4K TV's, despite them being cheaper now. 4K is very equal to Blu-Ray; In which Blu-Ray didn't exactly take over DVD's like DVD's have taken over VHS's. Not to mention that making games in Native 4K assets, etc. will take even more resources & money than it is to make games in Native 1080p.

What are your opinions?

Maybe not got in gaming, but definitely in TVs and movies. All TVs are pretty much 4K now and Apple/Google upgrade your digital movies to 4K for free and this is just the second year of such changes.

i got a 1080p TV because 4k resolution is only noticeable from a certain distance. at the distance i have my tv from my couch, i wouldn't even notice the difference.

it also depends on the size of the tv. obviously a 1080 video will look grainy on a 70 in TV. but i dont have that nor can afford one so eh.

i might get a 4k monitor for my computer, but then id have to upgrade my pc to run games in 4k. but id rather get a higher refresh rate if im going to be spending money like that...

Except that the transition to 4K adoption is much slower this time around (just like with 3D).

We have a 50" 4K TV and my laptop has a 15.6" 4K display.

I can notice differences on the desktop between 4K and 1080p, but I don't notice any difference between 4K and 1080p in videos / games (I barely even notice the difference between 4K and 720p). This is the case for both screens.

You should notice a huge frame rate drop in video games when going to 4k. Especially if you're used to 144 then going to 60 max.

the price is coming down very fast, which is accelerating the adoption rate, and streaming content producers are supporting it with content much more rapidly than blu-ray producers ever could have, as generally the 4k content is either included with your subscription or as part of a new price tier that's an extra $10/year more.

when you're asking yourself "will this new TV tech take over?" the answer is usually yes simply because of this chart:

I am sure the meme of next gen consoles is "wow this game is only 1080p" like when a game comes out these days and is 720p

Real bet is whether the industry finally makes 60 fps videogames standard on console

All I can say is lol. This happened before between 720p and 1080p when game consoles and tv was broadcast in 720p so 1080p was only good for Blu-ray movies. 4K 55 inch TVs are severely cheap now theres no reason to not buy one

Actually, it's the opposite.

4k is pretty much going mainstream in gaming, with console games aiming for it, and the Pro and One X being able to upscale. Next gen is going to be developed around 4k for all mainstream games sans Switch versions.

Streaming might be 4k, but movies in general are still mainly bought as regular blu-ray. Many newly released movies don't even have a 4k version available.

And broadcast/cable TV has a long way to go before 4k becomes the norm. I'd say at least 5 years before most cable companies start offering 4k channels. Pretty sure only Satellite currently has options for it at the moment.
