Seems to be used as a defense of their infidelity more often than not.

If I'm not handling you at your worst, it's because I'm at my worst. If you can't handle me when I'm at my worst and therefor not able to handle you at your worst, then you don't deserve me at my best, which is when I can handle you at your worst.

It's just a way to justify their shitty behavior. Instead of trying to improve yourself to be a better person for your partner, you're saying your partner should just take your abuse.

The biggest problem with people like that is usually their best is not worth the trouble to begin with.

The phrase's underlying translation is "I'm never going to put any effort to improve our relationship from my end, but you need to always roll out the red carpet for me ". If there's anyone on the planet you should (as a standard) have a filter for your attitude with it's a partner you actually want to keep around. This stupid motto that "you ain't gonna change for no one" rhetoric is just going to keep you single, because it immediately says you NEVER compromise (something that is fundamentally important for relationship success). You know how couples in long lasting relationships manage to comfortably stay together after having a huge meltdown towards each other? COMPROMISE. If your profile says you're incapable of doing that, it's a huge turn off to people looking for more than a hook up.

I mean the phrase is basically informing you that this person is going to immediately expect you to excuse their unattractive behavior for the sake of holding out for those other moments when they're a better person. And you don't know exactly how bad their worst can get. You don't know if their best is even worth the time. You don't know how often you get to see each.

Wow, doesn't that sound like an attractive proposal...
