Being less expensive than DVD players at the time of its US release, and its still the best selling console of all time 18 years later.

Do you think any console at this point will surpass the PS2 and be the new best selling console ever?

DVD drive certainly helped a lot for its time, probably in a similar way how the PS1 was apparently a better CD player than systems that cost up into the thousands of dollars.

I doubt anything will ever surpass it tbh.

Probably because the PS3 was also expensive as fuck. I remember the PS3 being one of the reasons Blu-Ray won the format war but that wasnt until later in its console life. 360 had HD-DVD support but only as a separate add-on...

Blu-ray was always (and still is) seen as a premium product instead of the new standard like DVD was for the time.

Nah I worked at best buy at the time. Once the ps3 had a $400 sku, it became cheaper than blu ray players and took off.

I remember when the PS3 first came out it was about the same price as a Blu Ray player. If you were already in the market for a player there was literally no reason not to get a PS3.

Funny enough the PS3 ended up only selling a couple hundred thousand less than the 360, seems like everyone remembers the 360 completely dominating but that's clearly not the case.

360 had a year jump, plus at the time of launch, a $200 cheaper price tag.

I'll admit as a big ps2 guy I went 360, didn't get a ps3 until the $400 sku happened.

I bought my PS3 to play games mainly (my PS1 and PS2 titles as well). I DID however convince my parents to purchase a PS3 to play Blu-Rays, so that we would have a video game system in the living room. At the time Blu-Ray players were like $400 and the PS3 was $450, so it was an easy sell. I also told my parents they could load their favorite CD's into the hard drive.

The PS3 really was an excellent media device.

Not exactly comparable to the PS2, but a lot of people are buying Xbox Ones for the 4K movie support, something even the One S is capable of doing.

It did dominate until the very end.

I didn't buy my PS3 until late 2011 and only because it finally got cheap enough to justify the few games I wanted for it. (basically MGS4)

I remember seeing that somewhere about the PS1 and that it was a really popular CD player for audiophiles at one point.
