Out of the 3 Starbucks locations I went to, I only approached one woman.

As an indirect conversation starter, I asked her to watch my laptop as I went to the bathroom. She agreed. When I came out, I commented on her Surface Pro and we got into a conversation from there. Tried working on my body language and voice so that I appeared confident...not sure if I succeeded in either of those elements. Apparently she is a foreigner from Vietnam and she has been in the US for 5 years. She seemed genuinely interested in talking to me, she kept trying to keep our discussion going, no dead air.

When I asked for her number, she suggested that I give her mine instead. I actually like this, as now she can control whether she is interested in contacting me or not. It keeps the pressure off, and it makes her more comfortable I imagine.

Unfortunately she didn't contact me (its been 2 days), but I didn't expect her to so I'm not disappointed. I'm proud that I put in the effort, and may try talking to other women later.

My question: Is what I did bad? Was it unethical or weird?

Think about how you feel when you go grocery shopping and this jerk approaches you to ask you to sign up for their fucking credit card. After the 1000th time, you're just had enough. It doesn't matter how good the credit card is. You're just tired of hearing it. Or when you're walking downtown and this god damn animal rights group dude approaches you to ask for donations. It's kind of like that.

While you're trying to look confident, the girl is thinking "god dammit, not another one. What do I have to do to drink my fucking coffee in peace?"

You got to get to know the girls. By just talking to a random person in a coffee shop you're really giving yourself a wall to climb over.

Maybe a bar at 2 AM, that's different. If she's got that nice short skirt with a little slit on the side and is wearing 50 pounds of makeup and false eyelashes, then yeah. If she's on her break for work and has 15 minutes at Starbucks and it's the only time of the day she gets to relax and you're intruding on her space... yeah...

If I'm trying to talk to some random girl at a starbucks, store, wherever I try to make eye contact with her, awkwardly smile, and then proceed to follow her throughout the store until I can think of something to talk about.

Usually it's "Hey, uh...Hi...How are you? I'm Space_Man" then they either say "Eeww get away from me, creep!" or "Hi! Great! How are you??"

If the former, then I know I should try dating her because she has standards and then proceed to cry because I ruined my chances. If the latter, then I decide that she's not worth my time because I can be some creep for all she knows and girls with low standards take that chance.

Youre selling yourself and in sales you have to expect and shrug off the nos. That was impressive what you did. Keep it balanced between casual/lighthearted and Im interested in getting to know you. Straying too far in one direction makes it weird. Sounds you did it well but its a numbers game in the end.
