How many times do I have to say that when the cops show up it doesn't matter if the person holding a gun is "good" or "bad"? All they see is someone with a gun and therefore a threat (and if that person is black, well...)

Emantic Fitzgerald Bradford Jr, the 21-year-old black man shot by the police in an Alabama mall, was the son of a Birmingham police officer and a decorated soldier who was uninvolved in the shooting, beloved by his community, and possibly attempting to stop the person who had opened fire in the mall. But after police shot him dead they let the actual shooter get away.

there was also an incident in the past year I think where a man stopped a mass shooting in a church and then cops burst in and shot the good guy. but he survived after surgery

He was likely running after the actual killer, most good guys want to stop the shooter not just drive them off. The dude being a cops son and a soldier was almost for sure chasing down the asshole to end the threat he possessed.

The police keep killing good black men and it looks really bad.

Why do people act like it's always some completely black and white situation where everyone is completely omniscient? There are cases of blatant police abuse and negligence, but an innocent person dying is not always a case of "the police are bad." They need to make split second decisions for the safety of the public, so it's very possible for tragic mistakes to happen. This article is clearly trying to spin it in a certain way, so it's hard to tell from the details given if the cop was in the right or not.

Multiple people were seen with their gun drawn.

this reminds me of a similar incident in which a good Samaritan with a gun got killed, they didn't even offer a drop the gun command they just flat out shot him.

The worst thing about this incident, aside from the loss of a legitimate hero's life, is that it might stop people from trying to subdue mass shooters in the future for fear of being shot by police.

This. Cops have fucked up too many times for me to believe they always give adequate time to respond, or aren't trigger happy in general.

Problem's in the training. They're taught to not let people shoot at them by taking out the threat after they've called that.

Unfortunately, this goes against human nature as when you get yelled at, you usually try to point your face towards the person yelling which is an immensely bad idea, which an arm swing or whatever the fuck can be easily misinterpreted as raising a gun in a high-stakes situation.

People tend to not understand that freeze means freeze. Don't turn, don't move, don't put your hands up, don't do anything. Stop until you get more direction. That's primarily because people(cops, criminals, and good samaritans alike) have awful judgement on the regular when they're tense, and do stupid shit on a constant basis.
