Is the underpaid thing real or just a meme?

For the amount of work that is expected of a teacher. They certainly aren't being paid enough for the work they put in.

It can vary a little bit from state to state, but generally, underpaid. Especially in red states where they are needed most but face budget constraints, malignment and pay cuts

All of my time outside of work is consumed by lesson planning, grading, and parent conferences.
I'm sick 24/7 from kid germs and can't afford to miss a single day.
I can never leave the kids alone so I dehydrate myself so I won't have to hold my piss all day.
Overcrowded class size filled with students that have mental and physical disabilities. Some violent. Who knows if the parents can afford/care enough to consistently give them their meds day to day.

I've been applying for a school janitor position because the 4 grand a year I make more than them is eaten into by the constant stream of school supplies I'm expected to pay for out of pocket. Head custodians make nearly twice what I do.

Meanwhile I see everyone moan about how bored they are at work pretending to do stuff while they shitpost on gamefaqs making 50k+ sitting on the toilet.

Sure we're overpaid.

Generally speaking, underpaid. They spend a lot of time out of class coming up with lesson plans, grading, etc. that they aren't compensated for.

It's a big reason why I'd never want to become a teacher. That, and just dealing with students en masse, particularly the troublemakers. It's not worth what they make.

Well, I did say it depends on location. Although the average salary for a teacher in the entire state of New York State is $66k, so its not just NYC with higher than average salaries for teachers.

Are you going by average as in mean, or median? Because NYC would definitely drive up the mean for the state significantly, given its population.

I think youre thinking it backwards, inner city teachers make less than teachers in counties upstate. Same goes for police officers, NYPD officers are paid significantly less than their upstate sheriff counterparts. Its weird and bizarre I know.

Underpaid. There is a reason there national teacher shortage. You want to complain about "bad" and "unqualified" teachers? My school literally has ads out for teachers that say "no certification, no problem!"
