That sounds like a pretty good description of my mom. Or at least when I was in school.
By the time I graduated, she became more overprotective of whatever I do and I appreciate it, but it can get annoying.

My mom is a much better person than me.

She stumbled, but she's been sober for about 7 years and I'm an asshole.

I do my best to let her know I appreciate her.

We rolled with the punches most of the time when we were kids. We were aware that she had a pretty rough upbringing herself, so the tough love was kind of expected.
But when we got around high school age, she became a lot more lenient towards us (unless somebody did some really dumb shit).

The most she does nowadays that bug is me is nag me about stuff. You need to check your health insurance., When was your last check up?, Why haven't you got a car yet?, When are you visiting your aunt?, etc.

She does do that, but it doesnt mean she doesnt love me and still deserves my hugs and kisses

If shes that toxic she doesnt, honestly. Ive been pushed to the brink of suicide by my mom several times (shes even said go kill yourself to me, knowing how depressed I am) and she barely deserves my willingness to be civil.

When I was 7 and taking my parents' divorce and the following living situation badly, my mother told me I was so depressing that I made her want to kill herself.

I don't remember exactly what I said to get that response, but I do remember she said it to me while we were in the drive through at a McDonald's.

Mine did similar to me. Lots of guilt tripping; I had to hide my health problems because we didn't really have money to pay for them and she'd cry and yell at me if I needed to see a doctor or dentist and she basically blamed me for everything. Blamed me for being homeschooled even when it's her fault that my dumbass father thought it was fine and dandy for her not to work to homeschool me when he had to quit working.
