https://www.cleveland.com/expo/news/erry-2018/11/0f32e762411182/ohio-democrats-outpolled-repub.html

As Ohio Republicans won the race for every statewide executive job from the governor on down this year, something different happened in lower-profile races.

The Democrats actually collected more total votes in the 116 Ohio House and Senate elections across the state, cleveland.com found in tabulating the unofficial returns.

It's a takeaway from Election 2018 that isn't the usual headline grabber. More importantly, in terms of controlling Ohio's government, the GOP won 72 of the 116 Statehouse races.

But the Republicans scored their wins for 62 percent of the seats while collecting just under 50 percent of the total vote.

This is a lot like what happened in Ohio's 16 congressional districts, where Republicans won 75 percent of the seats with just 52 percent of the overall vote.

These are two fresh examples of how skillfully gerrymandered legislative districts can sway the balance of power - especially when one party is in full control of drawing the maps as was the case for the current districts.

The next set of maps will be different to at least some extent.

At least something's being done about it already, from a previous vote:

Ohioans in 2015 voted to reform the way Statehouse districts will be drawn, beginning in 2021. Then, earlier this year, Ohio voters did the same for congressional districts going forward. The votes for change were not close, passing each time with more than 70 percent support.

The separate reforms carry their own set of rules, but the gist is the same - a new set of 10-year maps cannot be approved without buy-in from both major political parties.

"The problem with gerrymandering is so straight forward and clear cut if you just look at the numbers" from the election returns, said Catherine Turcer, one of the advocates for change as the executive director of Common Cause Ohio.

"I'm so pleased that the voters of Ohio have taken the step to rein in the problem. We deserve to be in control of the elections."

NE Ohio in particular is pretty bad, it's just this narrow strip of blue that comes down from lake erie (that hugs the coastline) from Cleveland into Akron and down through Youngstown and on over to Pittsburgh. That's basically how it looked after the midterm anyways.

This state needs fixed, basically the pundits are saying Ohio is solid red and no longer a swing state anymore. It's a swing state without a voice, basically.

Very true. Cleveland area is probably a 50/50 mix. The entire rest of the state is all repub.

I'm not sure how the redistricting process works in Wisconsin; in some states the legislature handles it, in others it's a non-partisan body.

Same thing happened in Michigan. Democrats swept the offices that count votes from the entire state (Governor, US Senate, Attorney General, and Secretary of State) but Republicans still won more seats in the State House and Senate.

Same. It saddens me the metro parks ain't more well-known outside of the locals. I spend so much time at the ones in Parma and Willoughby during the warm months. Even just to drive through it is great.

The crime and never-ending construction are the only real complaints I have. I would like to move away for a couple years, but Cleveland's always gonna be home.

Yeah, the construction part never seems to end. Im sure youve heard people say we get two seasons, construction and winter lmao.

Crime can be hit or miss, depending on your city. The whole county does have an opioid problem though.

Im in Parma pretty often btw, two of my best live there.

I still think its weird that a republican wins the governor office by a few points yet the state keeps re-electing a democratic senator. Like not EVERYONE votes along party lines but I always assume more do than that. >_>
