There is no way the fire was traveling at 330 miles per hour...

I didn't do the math, but it was EIGHTY football fields in ONE MINUTE. literally FIRE TORNADOS

Oh lol I found the CNN report you are talking about.

https://www.cnn.com/2018/11/09/us/california-wildfires-superlatives-wcx/index.html

They are strictly talking about area here, when you have a big circle, and that circle is expanding slowly in every direction, the speed that the area is increasing is massive. So the fire was spreading in all directions at a decent speed, but add all that area up and it becomes a big area in a short amount of time.

You are thinking of velocity in a straight line, like someone living 80 football fields (4.5 miles) away from the fire will have their house catch in 60 seconds... that is just insanity lol

It was burning the equivalent of a football field per second at its peak. That's not quite the same as moving 300 yards per second.

And this is why you need to have lots of controlled burns and segment sections off in worst case scenarios.

Also only build houses in Fire Prone areas out of Steel / Rebar / Concrete.

Do not allow substandard fire prone materials like wood.

Coat the houses in protective Fire-resistant coatings.

Separate the civilian areas with a huge fire break and don't let nature back in near civilians.

Do whatever it takes to separate the Fire Break near Civilian areas.

If that means digging up Earth and making Artificial hills or whatever, so be it.

It was reported that it was spreading at 80 football fields per minute at its peak. Each football field is 360 feet long. (380x80)/5280 = 5.45 miles per minute.

Dense forest with a lot of dead trees in windy weather is a recipe for disaster.

Because of the earthquake risks in California, the vast majority of new house are built with wood. You can build it with concrete and reinforce it, but it's a lot more expensive.

Trump say some stupid shit sometimes, but it doesn't mean he's wrong.

He's 100% right about poor forest management in California. You can't cut a few trees down without a needing some kind of environmental impact assessment. That's why timber companies don't even bother in California. Too much red tape just to cut down a few trees.

California requires some heavy tree thinning. What happens in all these wild fires and how it spreads so fast is because of crown fires. Imagine having 100 matches so close together that if you light one, it spreads to all of them in a matter of seconds. Because the trees are so dense, the top of trees catch fire and it just keeps spreading.

When you thin a forest, there is still the possible of crown fires, but it would require heavier winds to spread from one tree to the next. If they thin the trees and keep the fire on the ground, it spreads at a much slower rate and give firefights a chance to stop it before it causes mass destruction.

I can't stand how some people immediately dismiss Trump because he's not politically correct. Or because he even dared to bring up behavior that should probably be improved---and behavior that is ruining people's lives.

I can sort of get that. But, Trump's just outraged, as should the people be. Then the news talking heads and website headlines will tell them how bad Trump is and that it's no one's fault and the people will say "Oh, okay. Trump doesn't know what he's talking about. He's wrong and mean. This just happens."

So was it because the evacuation orders were sent out too late/never sent, or people just refused to leave when evacuated?

More people refuse to leave than you would expect. Also those fires move fast so people might just get caught up in it.

Also firefighters, first responders, police officers, etc all get swept up in it too.

When my dad's house had to get evacuated he waited till the last possible moment to leave one year. Since theres fires each year some people dont take it seriously enough

Sounds like how it is with hurricanes every year. Now, does the California Media/Politicians also hype each fire up as "It's going to be catastrophic, we're talking destruction on a massive scale, LA is going to burn to the ground." That's pretty much how hurricane coverage goes, and since so many storms never hit landfall at the predicted "devastating Category 4 or 5" and the destruction and loss of life isn't what was predicted, people get complacent. And then Katrina happens.

Here's what all the dead trees look like:

Those brown trees burn the brightest and they help the spread of wildfires. All these trees need to be cut down by the state of California and used for timber.
